New Orleans to add new assistant defensive backs coach
So far this offseason the Saints were left with only two coaching vacancies to fill. The first was that of Mike Nolan who left for Dallas to take over as their offensive coordinator. His role as linebackers coach was filled by former assistant linebackers coach Michael Hodges. The remaining position opened up when defensive assistant Leigh Torrence left for an assistant defensive backs gig with the New York Jets in February.
Now, nearly a month later, it was reported by Matt Zanitz of AL.com that New Orleans would be hiring Maryland’s cornerbacks coach and defensive passing game coordinator to take on the assistant cornerbacks coaching job. The move was later confirmed by Nick Underhill via sources.

Robinson had spent only the 2019 season with the Terrapins, but held the same position the year prior at Rutgers. He also 2016 and 2017 as the cornerbacks coach for Toledo and Temple respectively. He helped Temple field the AAC’s top-ranked passing defensive allowing only just over 206 passing yards per game. He had success in Toledo as well helping coach a defense that allowed on 220 passing yards per game.
Brandon Olsen of Whole Nine Sports shared via a former Toledo defensive player, “[Robinson] was passionate and really cared about his guys.” Maryland’s team website also credits Robinson as a strong recruiter as well, albeit in regards to Baltimore where he is from.
With the culture that the Saints coaching staff has been invested in cultivating over recent years, that is a promising review for how he will fit in with coaches like Aaron Glenn and Dennis Allen. This is Robinson’s first NFL coaching job.
As of now, unless the Saints plan to fill Michael Hodges previous assistant linebackers coach position, the coaching staff is back to capacity and ready to dive into free agency.
