Even since the 2019 season of the Seattle Seahawks came to a close in a 28-23 loss in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Green Bay Packers, Seattle fans have been hoping for the team to improve its pass rush. Whether that meant reaching agreement on a contract extension with Jadeveon Clowney, signing an impact free agent or selecting a pass rusher in the draft, fans have not been picky. With the news earlier this week that the Jacksonville Jaguars intend to use the franchise tag on Yannick Ngakoue, many fans had seen their hopes of signing Ngakoue as a free agent dashed.
However, barely 48 hours after those reports, NFL insider Tony Pauline is reporting that the Seahawks are indeed interested in Ngakoue. That should come as no surprise because Pete Carroll and John Schneider seem to be involved in at least exploring any attractive options that present themselves in trade. That said, the question, of course, becomes what would the compensation required be that could bring Ngakoue to Seattle?

Per Pauline, the current compensation expectation has Seattle sending a first and second round pick to the Jaguars in exchange for Ngakoue and the Jags second round pick. The year of the draft picks is not specified, which would seem to indicate that they could possibly all be in this year’s draft. If that is the case, the trade would look something like this:
- To Seattle: Ngakoue and pick 2.41
- To Jacksonville: 1.27 and 2.59
In addition, Seattle would obviously need to reach agreement on a contract with Ngakoue, which could be the sticking point. The Hawks would not give Frank Clark the type of contract he was looking for a year ago, so whether they would be willing to meet Ngakoue’s reported demands for a contract in the range of what Clark and Demarcus Lawrence of the Dallas Cowboys signed is certainly something that will be interesting to watch.
In any case, with two more weeks to go until free agency opens and seven weeks until the draft, the offseason is in full swing, but the Seahawks are, as always, keeping it interesting.
