Is there going to be a delay in the opening of the home of the Rams?

A construction worker on the SoFi Stadium project in Inglewood — the 2020 home of the LA Rams and LA Chargers — has tested positive for COVID-19 according to an email obtained by Jason B. Hirschhorn at SportsIllustrated’s ChargerReport. At this time there has been no information or comment as to whether or not this would delay the completion of the stadium, and how it would impact the Rams and Chargers at the start of the 2020 NFL season.

The Herrick Corporation, one of the companies involved with the construction of SoFi Stadium, sent an email Friday night notifying those who might have come in contact with the infected ironworker, a copy of which Sports Illustrated’s ChargerReport has obtained. When reached for a statement on the positive test for COVID-19 on Saturday, The Herrick Corporation vice president Wayne Morrison told SI, “No comment.”

Health and safety protocols were outlined in the email and followed up with a warning that the project was subject to being shut down if the guidelines were not met.

It also stated that “if these guidelines cannot be met and a project is in tight quarters, consideration should be given to shutting the construction project down until safer conditions exist.”

The city of Los Angeles is currently on a “Safer at Home” emergency order by Mayor Eric Garcetti in response to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, asking non-essential workers to stay at home to slow the spread of the disease but thus far there have been no announcements that SoFi Stadium’s opening would be delayed. The grand opening event is currently set to be a Taylor Swift concert on July 25 and as of late January the stadium was roughly “85 percent” completed.

The season is scheduled to begin in early September, as usual, though that too may remain tentative for the time being.
