Stefen Wisniewski is signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Chiefs lost a key player along their offensive line.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a starter from their Super Bowl team on Thursday evening. Offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski is heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers, per his own Twitter account.

Wisniewski, 30, became the third player to leave the Chiefs in free agency, joining defensive lineman Emmanuel Ogbah (Dolphins) and defensive back Kendall Fuller (Redskins).

The Chiefs signed Wisniewski, a native of Pittsburgh, in mid-October when the team had several injuries along the offensive line. The Super Bowl LII winner (Eagles) immediately brought eight years of NFL experience to the locker room, but his value on the field did not show itself until late in the season when left guard Andrew Wylie suffered an ankle injury.

Wisniewski started the Chiefs’ last two regular-season games, and even though Wylie said he’d be “good” for the playoffs, the veteran kept the job throughout. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked about that decision ahead of Super Bowl LIV.

“They’re both good,” said Reid of Wylie and Wisniewski. “They’re both good players. There’s nothing wrong with Wylie, it’s just you get in and get going and it’s working. So you stick to it and roll with it. It doesn’t mean Wylie can’t. We do a good job with him in there also. Wis (Stefen Wisniewski) has experience and his strengths are that. He’s got experience, he’s dirty tough, he brings good energy and he’s brilliant.”

With Wisniewski gone and Wylie retained, Wylie will now be afforded the opportunity to win his job back. Still, it remains a good bet the Chiefs bolster the interior offensive line in the draft.

The Chiefs aren’t scheduled to play the Steelers in 2020, but they could see them in the playoffs. As for Wisniewski, he will forever be a Super Bowl LIV champion in Kansas City.
