Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
‘Valentine’s Views:’ Some leftover thoughts from Indianapolis - Big Blue View
There have been several reports in recent days from folks like Jordan Ranaan of ESPN and Matt Lombaro of New Jersey Advance Media that the Giants are one of the primary players in the Jadeveon Clowney sweepstakes. I have heard those same whispers. Am I crazy about the idea? Not really. I’d rather have Yannick Ngakoue, but if the Jacksonville Jaguars are smart Ngakoue never reaches the open market. Do I buy that the Giants would go all in on Clowney, 27, if he is the only elite pass rusher who hits the open market? [...] The price tag for Clowney, according to what I’ve been told, is at least five years and in excess of $100 million. Would the Giants go that far? They gave Olivier Vernon, a much inferior player to Clowney, five years and $85 million at a time when the cap was tens of millions of dollars lower. So, if Gettleman and Joe Judge believe Clowney is the right player I think they would.
Byron Jones is expected to hit free agency and there are multiple dots connecting him to the Eagles - BGN
The Cowboys don’t seem to be willing to let Jones walk merely because they don’t want him back. Rather, the issue is that Dallas only has so much cap space to work with, and Jones is just one of 25 unrestricted free agents currently on the Cowboys’ roster (in addition to three restricted free agents). The Cowboys have bigger fish to fry when it comes to working out long-term contract extensions with Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper. Had the Cowboys not done something silly, like, give a ton of money to a running back and an off-ball linebacker last year, they could’ve been more realistically able to retain Jones. Unfortunately for them, that’s not the case. So, with Jones unlikely to return to Dallas, where could he land instead? Multiple rumors indicate the Philadelphia Eagles might be the team to sign him.
Babes On Broad #27: The Wild Andre Dillard Trade Rumor - BGN Radio
Sam Wilson & Jessica Towne discuss a wild trade rumor coming from NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein, PLUS their thoughts on what the Eagles should do at OT in the off-season and What’s Going On Around Philly! Powered by SB Nation & Bleeding Green Nation!
Podcast: Jason Peters vs. Andre Dillard, and Eagles free agency - PhillyVoice
Jason Peters might be back? Doug Pederson emphatically said he wants him back, though Howie Roseman was a little more bland in his support of that notion. It’s a huge bummer if so, because it really only means one thing, that Andre Dillard isn’t ready. There was a perception was that Dillard wasn’t great initially, but got a lot better. Are we too forgiving of his awful performance at RT? Cowboys tape was bad. Vikings and Seahawks tape was awful. Very passive as a player.
Jonesing for a Corner - Iggles Blitz
I think the Eagles need to re-sign Jalen Mills and add a starting CB in free agency. Use the draft to find depth and players to develop into future starters. The Eagles have failed at this recently, but that doesn’t mean they quit trying. They need to figure out what went wrong and address those issues. Back to Jones. He isn’t a great player and you would be over-paying him, but he is the best corner on the market and would be a substantial upgrade over anyone the Eagles have had in recent years. You could plug Jones in at RCB, where he played in Dallas. If you can have a CB limit one side of the field, your FS can cheat to the other side. You can gameplan more creatively. You can play more aggressively. Having an above-average CB makes a huge difference. Going after Jones makes a ton of sense for the Eagles. They won’t be his only suitor so Howie Roseman, Doug Pederson and Jim Schwartz will have to be smart and aggressive in pursuit of him.
Eagles hoping to be smarter when it comes to injury-prone players in free agency and the draft - Inquirer
The Eagles are going to draft a tight end next month. It could be Florida Atlantic’s Harrison Bryant. It could be Washington’s Hunter Bryant. It could be somebody else. But they will be drafting a tight end. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert are one of the league’s best tight-end tandems. But one of them – probably Ertz – figures to be gone after the 2021 season, when both are scheduled to be free agents. The position is expected to move up a few tax brackets soon when the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce and the 49ers’ George Kittle sign new contracts. Kittle will be a free agent after next season. Kelce’s contract expires after the 2021 season, but the Chiefs already are talking to him about a bank-breaking extension. Ertz won’t command quite as much as Kelce and Kittle, but he’ll be at the top of the next tier. If he continues his impressive development, Goedert will be right there with them. Even with the salary cap expected to take a big jump soon when the league negotiates new TV deals, the Eagles aren’t expected to be willing to invest the type of cap space it would take to keep both Ertz and Goedert beyond 2021. One, absolutely. Both, no. Doug Pederson used 12-personnel (two tight ends) and 13-personnel (three tight ends) 55.7% of the time this season. That was far and away the most since he became the Eagles’ head coach. But a lot of that was out of necessity because of the injury problems at wide receiver. The truth is, Pederson is an 11-personnel (1 RB, 1TE, 3WR) guy at heart.
The draft-day move the Eagles have to make and more in Roob’s Observations! - NBCSP
1. I know there’s speculation about the Eagles going cornerback in the first round or maybe even offensive line. But they’re nuts if they don’t target one of this top incredible group of receivers, and if it means trading up into the 12-16 range they sure have the ammo to do it. It’s a no-brainer. Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb would be at the top of my shopping list, but he might be out of their realistic range. If they have a chance to move up and get either of the Alabama receivers, Jerry Jeudy or Henry Ruggs, they simply have to do it. But I’m also intrigued by LSU’s Justin Jefferson considering his production on the field and Combine performance. Either Lamb, Jeudy, Ruggs or Jefferson HAS to be an Eagle by the end of the day on April 23.
Separating fact from fiction as NFL free agency nears - PE.com
This team has had a lot of success in recent years by signing players like offensive guard Brandon Brooks and safeties McLeod and Malcolm Jenkins and all of those players had the same characteristics: They were a bit under the radar, they fit positions of need for the Eagles, and they were just reaching their NFL primes. Ideally, you want to sign players who are on the rise and ink them to long-term contracts or fill in some of the roster blanks late in free agency with older players on shorter-term deals. The Eagles haven’t tipped their intentions, but it’s clear when you look at the roster that the offense needs more playmakers to help quarterback Carson Wentz and the defense can use help at all three levels.
Could Raiders be eyeing Nate Sudfeld in free agency? - PFT
Although there have been no specific reports or rumors (yet) linking Sudfeld to the Raiders, the evidence is hiding in plain sight. Watch this video from 2018, during which Raiders G.M. (and at the time Eagles preseason analyst) Mike Mayock praised Sudfeld’s performance. Then there’s the fact that Sudfeld was drafted by Washington, and was coached for more than a year by Jay Gruden, brother of Raiders coach Jon Gruden. In 2017, Jon personally worked with Sudfeld and other members of the Washington roster prior to the launch of the offseason program.
Q&A: Let’s talk about quarterback competitions - Big Cat Country
Q: How do you see the quarterback competition playing out? A: There is no such thing as a quarterback competition. Doug Marrone and Dave Caldwell have already made up their minds and the whole “quarterback competition” is coach speak with Nick Foles still on the team. The starting quarterback is Gardner Minshew and until Foles is traded or cut, they will continue speaking in this way. It’s the polite thing to do and it also makes Foles a little less undesirable on the trade block. But make no mistake, Minshew is the guy and barring injury, Foles has already played his final snap for the Jaguars.
When was the last time you were upset about the Cowboys losing a player to free agency? - Blogging The Boys
It’s not easy to let first-round draft picks leave. It’s even harder when that player has earned All-Pro honors. And it’s even more difficult when that player plays at one of the more important positions in the league. Add in the fact that he’s a gold-star high-character guy who just so happens to be the Cowboys designated player rep for the collective bargaining agreement that is in the works right now, and it just seems like all the boxes are checked for Jones to stick around. But apparently, they’re not as the business of the NFL is rearing its ugly head. Based on the tea leaves, the Cowboys don’t value Jones as much as what he’s likely to earn on the open market. Financially, it’s going to be great for Jones as opportunities like this aren’t always readily available since the shelf life of a pro football player isn’t very long. It’s sad for fans that have grown attached to him, but these kind of things happen. It got us thinking, when was the last time you’ve really felt upset about a Cowboys player leaving in free agency?
Redskins rumors: Ron Rivera told Tua Tagovailoa he wants him to compete with Dwayne Haskins Jr. - Hogs Haven
So Rivera told Tua that the plan is to bring him to Washington to compete with Dwayne Haskins Jr. The writer’s source also adds that they don’t think Haskins is the guy right now, and they want to bring in competition. Rivera has talked about bringing in competition, but mentioned a veteran. Tua got good news about his recovery from the hip injury that ended his final season at Alabama. Would he be ready to play Week 1? Maybe, but what happens to Haskins if he wins the job?
2020 NFL combine recap: Kiper, McShay on top draft prospects, risers, best of workouts, more - ESPN+
Noah Igbinoghene, CB, Auburn. The fourth corner and 39th overall player on the Scouts Inc. board coming into the combine, Igbinoghene didn’t blow anyone away with his testing results — but he checked a lot of boxes. He posted the same 40 time as Okudah, both jumps were above average and his performance on the bench was average. He flashes the same burst and balance during drills that he shows on tape. Igbinoghene has one pick over the past two seasons, and he’s not a natural hands catcher despite playing receiver earlier in his career. But he flashes the ability to snatch it out of the air. He remains firmly in the early Day 2 conversation.
Draft prospect Laviska Shenault to undergo core surgery - NFL.com
One of this year’s top receiving prospects is going under the knife ahead of the draft. Former Colorado receiver Laviska Shenault will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a core muscle injury that he played through this season, sources told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Saturday. Dr. William Meyers from Philadelphia is expected to perform the procedure, Rapoport added. The Buffaloes wideout’s timetable for recovery is six to eight weeks, Rapoport reported. Shenault should be healthy well before the start of the 2020 season.
11 winners and 5 losers from the 2020 NFL Combine - SB Nation
Loser: Colleen Wolfe’s assignment for NFL Network. St. John’s offensive lineman Ben Bartch earned attention for revealing an interesting weight-gain strategy: A disgusting smoothie with scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, Gatorade, and other ingredients. Surely there are better ways to put on pounds. Unfortunately for NFL Network’s Colleen Wolfe, she drew the assignment to go smoothie tasting with Bartch on the sideline.
XFL 2020 Week 4 takeaways: DC is a nightmare, P.J. Walker is NFL bound, and the Vipers are rejuvenated - CBS Sports
P.J. Walker is unquestionably NFL material. Sometimes, when we talk startup leagues, people are a little too eager to deem an exciting prospect worthy of the NFL. Sometimes, in response, people are too hesitant to crown someone worthy. Whichever side you might be on, there’s only one right answer when it comes to Walker right now: He’s good, with a capital “G” — so much so that it’d be stunning if he’s not getting calls from NFL teams after the season. He can be fluttery in the pocket, he has some erratic stretches, and he’s not very big, but there’s simply no way to watch him play a 60-minute game and not be wowed. And it’s not as if he’s all highlights, no fundamentals; this guy makes some touch throws to the sideline that some NFL quarterbacks wish they could make. Get him in a training camp. (Or pay up, Houston!)
