Let’s take a break from the first round talk.
With just a few weeks remaining (probably) until the start of the NFL Draft, much has been made of what the Lions will do with their first-round pick. A few names come to mind, but Ohio State cornerback Jeffrey Okudah seems to be the hot name for now and many mocks are all but writing that name in stone for Detroit, whether they stay at three or move back a few spots.
But it’s the Day 2 picks that really matter the most. If you can consistently hit big on your early-to-mid-round picks, then you’re in pretty darn good shape. The Lions have struggled in that area from time to time, but this year they have four picks in the top-85, and three picks on the second day of the draft. If they trade down from the third overall pick, they could possibly have at least four picks on Day 2, which would help them address the many holes remaining on their roster.
Today’s Question of the Day is:
Who is your favorite Day 2 prospect for the Lions?
My answer: There are many that come to mind, but if the Lions were able to grab Okudah in the first round, then I really like the idea of going after an edge rusher, and hopefully a guy like A.J. Epenesa—someone who is a perfect fit for this scheme—would be there for the taking.
If the Lions do not address the cornerback position in the first round, then there are a lot of guys I like in the early second. Kristian Fulton would be the most ideal, but he is probably going in the first round at some point. Behind him, I really like Auburn CB, Noah Igbinoghene as a fit for this defense. Damon Arnette and Trevon Diggs, if their health checks out, would be nice options as well.
If the Lions decide to address an offensive skill position, give me J.K. Dobbins for my top running back and KJ Hamler at wide receiver for the Lions’ long-term slot receiver. I also like the idea of adding a tackle or guard in the second rather than the third, because I think there will be a huge drop off in talent after the second round, so getting someone like Cesar Ruiz or Lloyd Cushenberry III is a must if they’re serious about addressing the starting guard position through the draft.
