Broncos prepare for virtual draft

A digital draft definitely adds to the event, knowing the Denver Broncos will make their decisions from the homes of John Elway and Vic Fangio.

Happy Easter, Broncos Country!

As companies across the country conduct business digitally, so too will the NFL.

Earlier this week, Roger Goodell sent a memo to all 32 teams that the 2020 NFL Draft will take place in a completely virtual format. It’s the league’s latest response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The memo also said that all league and team facilities will remain indefinitely closed. Goodell said the facilities would reopen only when it is safe to do so, and that will be determined by public health advice and government policies.

Welcome to the virtual world where we’re all trying to find balance amidst unsettling calamity. A digital draft definitely adds to the event, knowing the Denver Broncos will make their decisions from the homes of John Elway and Vic Fangio.

“I think the good thing is we’ve gotten a tremendous amount of work done already,” Elway told the Broncos’ website on Tuesday. “Our scouts are already looking at juniors that are possible guys that come out next year in the draft. Our scouts at this point in time (have) moved on to next year. So, as far as this year’s draft and the information and the reports that we’ve gotten from all the scouts, those are all in. We feel good about where we are. It helped us tremendously (that) Vic … had the coaches stay home from the Combine and spend one full week on the draft, and so all the coaches got all their reports in on the players in this year’s draft. That was beneficial.

”… We feel pretty good about where we are. The draft staying where it is is fine. … We’re in good shape.”

On the MHR Radio Podcast, Adam Malnati and I wonder what a virtual draft will look like. We’re also curious if the Broncos and the NFL will be able to pull it off. You would think a multi-billion dollar company would have no problem running a digital draft, but this is the same league that doesn’t know what a catch is. It will definitely be interesting to see how this plays out.

Welcome to the virtual world.
