Cowboys could target this position early in the 2020 NFL Draft - Maximo Gonzales, Clutch Points
Positions the Cowboys need to look at early in the 2020 draft.
According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, the Cowboys may look to use the No. 17 pick on one of the the big-name wide receiver prospects if they are still on the board.
The Cowboys may go WR in either the “first or second round” in this years draft. If one of the Big 3 WRs (Lamb, Jeudy, Ruggs) are available at 17, don’t be surprised if Dallas pulls the trigger.
The prospect of the Cowboys going with a wideout in the early is certainly not too far-fetched. After all, they are in the midst of securing the final piece of their offense. That’s obviously assuming quarterback Dak Prescott re-signs for the long haul. It only makes sense to beef up his supporting cast heading into the 2020 NFL season.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not the aforementioned names will still be available by the time the Cowboys are on the clock. The restrictions by the NFL in response to the coronavirus pandemic has done little to affect their draft stock. And they could very well be off the board within the first 15 picks.

This particular wide receiver at 17 could give the Cowboys the best WR room in the NFL.
FRISCO - I don’t know that Mel Kiper is especially plugged in to the likes, wants and wishes of the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Draft. But the ESPN analyst remains a valued voice simply in terms of prospect evaluation.
Accept the second concept regarding Kiper - that he knows draft talent. Mirror it with what he thinks of the existing talent on the Dallas roster. And then dream on your own about more weaponry for QB Dak Prescott.
And voila, you have what Kiper (behind an ESPN pay wall but certainly something that will come up on TV in a Kiper appearance) labels an elite group.
”Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and Lamb would instantly become one of the NFL’s top wide receiver trios,’’ he writes.
Skipping past the B.A.A. concept (“Best Available Athlete’’ and don’t worry too much about “need’’), we can argue that given the fact we’re talking about a third receiver, and given the fact that talent at that position is available in later rounds, and given the fact that the Cowboys have holes on defense ... maybe a wide receiver in Round 1 isn’t the wisest use of this puzzle piece.

Florida’s CJ Henderson is the second-best cover corner in this draft behind Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah (of South Grand Prairie), so he should be one of Dallas’ primary targets in the first round.
Listed at 6-1, 204 pounds, Henderson has prototypical size at the position to go with elite athletic ability. He has the size to go toe-to-toe with big-bodied possession receivers, the quickness to mirror and match swifter receivers, and the deep speed to blanket the burners.
Henderson excels in press-man coverage, where his elite athleticism enables him to effortlessly mirror and match receivers at every level of the defense.
As good as Henderson is in coverage, he is bad in run support and tackling. He is a certified liability as a tackler, not only from a technical perspective (he often ducks his head and doesn’t wrap up on contact), but also from a spacing and leverage standpoint.
But with his coverage ability, the Cowboys could easily work around the tackling issues because, let’s be honest, corners don’t get paid to tackle. They get paid to cover, and Henderson excels there. His tackling is likely the only reason he’d be available at pick No. 17 anyway, so it kind of plays into the Cowboys’ favor at this point although they would obviously attempt to improve the tackling.

“To me, you pay Dak Prescott. Forget all those numbers. They’re No. 1 in the league because of Dak Prescott, not because of this guy. It’s a deep draft at receiver. They made a huge mistake right here.”
The Cowboys exercised the exclusive franchise tag on 26-year-old Prescott earlier this offseason and are in the midst of negotiating a longer-term contract. The two parties have until July 15 to agree on a deal.
The comments came as a shock to some in the NFL community with NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport calling for Ryan to apologize.
“What has Amari Cooper done to deserve this personal attack? He’s a hard worker, played through injuries, and is a good teammate. Rex Ryan should apologize,” Rapaport tweeted.
Hours later, Ryan issued an apology in response to the backlash.

The Cowboys have gone through the first portion of free agency where most of the big deals happen. They kept some players and they lost some players. One player they lost that was an impact player last year was Randall Cobb. Given how well he played in 2019, and with his old coach Mike McCarthy coming to Dallas, there was heavy speculation that the Cowboys would re-sign him.
Then the Texans happened. Cobb got a three-year deal worth $27 million from the team based in Houston with $18.75 million of that guaranteed. That was just too rich for the Cowboys in free agency, so now Dallas has a hole at the slot. They need a number three receiver.
There are some candidates already on the roster, but a there is also the draft. The wide receiver class in this 2020 draft is deep. There is so much talent that there is going to be picks past the first round that are going to be impact guys.
ESPN decided to take 16 wide receivers who are in the draft and pick the perfect landing spot for them among NFL teams. Dallas was one of the teams that were chosen as a landing spot. Van Jefferson was the guy.

The Dallas Cowboys have painted themselves into a corner (so to speak) at the cornerback position. Gone is their the All-Pro Byron Jones who left in free agency. In comes…who exactly? Internal replacements for CB1 include Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, and Anthony Brown. All of them talented, but all of them coming off some very difficult seasons.
So while it’s possible one of them steps up into the now-vacated CB1 role, chances are the Dallas Cowboys will need to use an early pick in the draft to upgrade the top of their depth chart. Drafting for need is not a very powerful position to be in on draft day and historically leads to some pretty disastrous results. If Dallas wants to avoid this, they may want to look to the trade market to free them up in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The hottest name on the trade market last season was Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson. The former All-Pro was coming off a six-game suspension and looking for a new deal. Rumors of discontentment grew and whether valid or not, Peterson’s name popped up in trade talk everywhere.
Adam Schefter reported the Cardinals received at least three calls before Peterson even took the field in Week 7 of 2019. And while the Arizona GM, Steve Keim, has repeatedly denied interest in trading his star cornerback, the offers continued to roll in. Even the Philadelphia Eagles got in on the bidding.

Gerald McCoy is going to fit in perfectly in Dallas.
Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was having a “busy day” on Thursday.
His 1-year-old son, Mars, had struggled to sleep comfortably last night, so dad didn’t get to sleep until 6 a.m. By 7 a.m., it was time to wake Mars’ older siblings for their quarantine home-school regimen that dad has been monitoring each day 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. McCoy already had mapped out his offseason workout of the day for after school: Run two miles on the treadmill. Bike six to 10 more. Work through Manny Pacquiao’s ab workout, which he’d cue up on YouTube.
“I always try to find an edge, find an advantage,” McCoy told USA Today Sports by phone Thursday afternoon, after he had supervised “movement and snack” school time and just before one kid beckoned for technology help. “So I YouTube great players and people who are great at what they do.”
With a long list of offseason workouts ready and five children to parent, it’s no wonder McCoy isn’t worried about fitting into the Cowboys’ scheme two weeks after signing a three-year deal worth up to $18.3 million ($9 million guaranteed) with the team he grew up rooting for.
But McCoy offers more reason why he’s excited for and confident about his potential in Dallas.
