Draft INSIGHT: LT Austin Jackson

Should the Browns pass on an offensive tackle in the first-round, ROUND 2 will provide a starter

The Browns will likely need an offensive tackle at some point in this year’s draft. If they decide to pass on one of the major four OT’s in Round 1 and go defense instead, USC left tackle Austin Jackson is big and powerful, but needs to be a bit more competitive. He will need to be coached up a bit especially with pass blocking as he came from a predominately run-first offense. Cleveland should look at taking him in the second-round at number 41.

Jackson has the ability to pop defenders and get into the second level against faster linebackers. His redirection skills is a nice trait and he is very good at pulling when asked. He is blessed with anchor skills needed to maintain the outside tackle position with a quick first step. Jackson could be ready to step in Day 1, sooner than later, for a starting position.

Jackson was the anchor of USC’s much-improved offensive line last season. The 6-foot-6 junior achievement’s were even more impressive because he donated bone marrow to his younger sister who suffered from a rare blood disease less than a month before the start of training camp. He is raw, but if given some time to develop, he can contribute in pass protection. Jackson has the size teams are looking for at the position. On film, he appears to have the athleticism and quick feet they want as well.
