The Kist & Solak Show #182!
The Philadelphia Eagles have a plethora of new wide receivers coming to town, but with new solutions come new problems.
The major focus of the entire draft, not just with the wide receivers, was speed. That’s a big talking point in terms of their philosophy. However there’s more to it than just becoming faster. First year wide receiver coach Aaron Moorehead has a huge task ahead of him in getting the most out of the new additions.
I spoke about this on The Kist & Solak Show #182 w/my co-host Benjamin Solak. What follows are loosely transcribed portions of my discussion about Moorehead’s role in solidifying the position...
“What Moorehead is tasked with doing is so difficult considering the circumstances.. now first, what does he have to do..
I think you take John Hightower and Quez Watkins and put them in one bucket. If he can get one of those two 6th rounders to a point where they’re legitimately rosterable, that’s a win. It’s a 6th round pick, yeah they’re fast, but hitting 50% on a player that is capable of contributing in the 6th is a lot harder than it sounds...
Second is getting Jalen Reagor up to speed with the offense. Reagor has plenty of talent, that’s not the question, but he also wasn’t asked to do a whole lot within the TCU offense, which is their fault, not his, because when given the chance Reagor showed he could snap people off and make guys miss in space with the ball in his hands. Reagor only had 9 screens come his way, in the world of college football offense that’s a criminal offense for a guy of his talents.
Put that in contrast with Brandon Aiyuk, who had 25 screens, Bryan Edwards from South Carolina had 36 of ‘em, doggone Devin Duvernay of Texas had 42 screens, FORTY TWO… and Reagor can only get 9? That tells me right there, you don’t know how to use ‘em, especially when your quarterback is so horrendous that Reagor has one of the highest uncatchable target rates in the nation...
Aaron Moorehead has got to get Reagor ready with a route tree with convertible routes on a level he just never experienced at TCU... So that’s number two…
Number three, work with the existing WRs there, guys like DeSean who you probably don’t have to worry about, but guys like Greg Ward, yeah, Ward had his issues getting on the same page with Wentz and understanding his landmarks for the better part of the season, there’s still more work to be done there. Plus you’ve got the addition of Marquise Goodwin.
Number four, help JJ Arcega-Whiteside take a step... he’s gotta prove it this year because otherwise he’s just taking up a roster spot... Aaaron Moorehead has to get him up to speed.
So that’s four big factors: Getting value out of late round rookies, getting your 1st round pick up to speed, working with the vets to get the most out of them and getting JJAW to evolve.
If Aaron Moorehead can accomplish a good portion of that, you’re no longer worried about the wide receiver position... and he’s going to have to do it in unprecedented circumstances where at least for now it’s going to be done virtually...
Is there a rookie minicamp? We don’t know. Is there a full or even abbreviated training camp? We have no idea.. what does preseason look like? So you have all these factors that Moorehead has to nail as a first year wide receiver coach in the worst possible conditions...”
