Golden Nuggets: Bobby Wagner says Seahawks are the team to beat in NFC West

Pass me some of what Wagner is smoking.

Fans of every team have optimism that their team will make a run in the upcoming season.

We saw the San Francisco 49ers go from 4-12 in 2018 to a Super Bowl appearance last season, continuing with the NFL trend where a cellar dweller from the year before makes it to the playoffs one year later.

One of the teams they beat out is their divisional rival Seattle Seahawks, who are on a great run under Pete Carroll, making the postseason seven out of the last eight years and winning a Super Bowl in 2013.

Seahawks’ Linebacker Bobby Wagner joined ESPN’s First Take and discussed the upcoming NFL Season and why he still believes his squad is the best in the NFC West.

“I feel really confident, obviously, Russell [Wilson] is an amazing quarterback; the things that he does on the field are just amazing. Like you said, he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks in our game. We’re confident on that side. I feel like from the defensive standpoint, there’s a lot of room for improvement. We have to play a little bit better. I feel like if we make those changes and make those improvements, I still feel like we’ll be the team to beat.”

Last I checked, the Niners are the reigning division and conference champions, so I don’t know where he is getting the word “still” from.

The Seahawks added a nice piece in cornerback Quinton Dunbar and added receiver Phillip Dorsett in free agency, which let’s be honest, isn’t moving the needle much.

As Wagner mentioned, the Seahawks have room for improvement on defense, but that isn’t going to happen with the chances decreasing by the day that pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney will return.

Meanwhile, the 49ers lost a beast of their own in DeForest Buckner, but managed to obtain the No. 13 pick in the NFL Draft, while re-signing some key contributors and adding some secondary pieces in free agency. Not to mention quarterback Jimmy Garopollo coming back for just his second full season as a starter.

I get Wagner should be confident in his team, but to say they’re still the team to beat is ridiculous. The Seahawks very well might be the third best team in the NFC West considering the moves the Arizona Cardinals have made coupled with another year of development for QB Kyler Murray.
