Golden Nuggets: Will the 49ers add a RB in the draft?

There has been plenty of discussion among the fans and media about the 49ers depleted wide receiving corps, and the need to add help from the draft. Of course they’re right, and the 49ers are definitely going to address that, likely in the first round, but what about running back?

The 49ers have a full room currently, but there are several question marks in the bunch. Is Breida sticking around or will he be traded? Can Jerick McKinnon return to his form from 2017 having not played in a regular season game in over two years? Is Jeff Wilson Jr ready to ditch the practice squad and take on a more prominent role in 2020?

If the answer turns out to be no to all of those, then the Niners are looking at Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman for 2020, which means they’ll need to add another back. But is Shanahan willing to spend a draft pick at the position? The 49ers have selected 27 players in the draft since Kyle took over, and only one was a running back - Joe Williams. And that was 2017.

They’ve mostly chosen to shop either in NFL free agency (Coleman, McKinnon) or undrafted player free agency (Breida, Wilson Jr.). But I think there is good chance that Shanahan finally breaks down and grabs another one in the draft this year.

Now, I don’t believe that he’ll want to spend one of their top two picks at the position, which means he’ll be shopping on day three. So who might be available?

Well, we know that Kyle likes speed. Sub 4.5 speed (sub 4.4 in some cases), which eliminates most backs available at that point. So who does fit that description?

Anthony McFarland, Maryland (4.44), Darrynton Evans, App St (4.41), and Joshua Kelley, UCLA (4.49).

McFarland should be day three, but he might be long gone before the 49ers first pick at 157, so they might need to trade up if they are interested. Evans and Kelley are expected to go closer to the 5th round when the 49ers have two picks.

So what do you think Niners Nation? Should Kyle dip into the draft pool for a running back this year? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
