The Chiefs released the six calls to their new drafted players on their official YouTube account.
Phone calls to prospects who have just been selected to the NFL have become a significant part of what makes NFL Draft weekend so much fun — the call is a culmination of the years of hard work it takes to making it to the highest level of professional football.
From a team standpoint, there can be some hidden gems and cues to gather if you listen and watch closely enough. There are also a fair share of amusing moments. This year’s virtual NFL Draft meant more video calls, and by draft’s end, the Chiefs completed six of them.
In this article, we’ll overreact to Kansas City’s calls.
Round 1: RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
:38 - Andy Reid breaks the Patrick Mahomes news to Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Brett Veach tells him again right after to make sure he knows.
1:16 - Love Eric Bieniemy here. About four congratulatory words before telling him to be ready to go to work.
1:49 - Running backs coach Deland McCullough said he texted Edwards-Helaire, “it was on” a few days prior to the draft. The Chiefs wanted Edwards-Helaire all week.
2:35 - Reid said he knows he’s one of the draft’s hardest workers, and he made it very clear it was a Veach push to get him to Kansas City.
3:11 - Bieniemy is back! Just one final reminder that there are no games and that he must be ready to “chop wood when the time comes.” How is this man not a head coach?
Round 2: LB Willie Gay Jr.
:41 - Veach mentions success with players from Mississippi State (Chris Jones). “You know you’re going to follow in line.”
1:26 - Steve Spagnuolo, Matt House and Britt Reid already seem to have a good rapport with Gay Jr.
2:15 - Reid tells Gay Jr. he was the staff’s No. 1 pick at linebacker — which is great, considering the Chiefs got him in the second round without a move up.
Round 3: OL Lucas Niang
:15 - Niang, a hero, tells Clark Hunt he is going to block his ass off.
1:05 - Bieniemy follows Veach in saying that they are glad Niang was still available to them to take. This was the third pick in a row in which the Chiefs come off feeling fortunate the player they wanted was still there. Bieniemy references Anthony Sherman liking his Connecticut background.
1:57 - Andy Reid introduces himself.
Round 4: CB L’Jarius Sneed
:15 - Cornerback coach Sam Madison’s sunshine Zoom background is excellent.
1:32 - Reid tells Sneed he was the staff’s No. 1 guy (Oh come on, him too? In the fourth?), but more importantly, he tells Sneed he will play cornerback. Sneed has safety experience.
1:47 - Defensive backs coach Dave Merritt says that the Chiefs need the 4.3 speed he offers.
Round 5: DE Mike Danna
:26 - Defensive line coach Brendan Daly, who is quickly becoming a fan favorite, tells Danna if there is one player he could get on day three, it was him. This is getting a little ridiculous now...
...though it does show how in unison the personnel staff is with the coaching staff, which you don’t see everywhere. Daly’s beard is tremendous.
1:16 - Is there a person in the NFL who is having more fun during the draft than Andy Reid? The answer is no.
Round 7: CB BoPete Keyes
1:00 - Spagnuolo essentially tells Keyes he is a Chiefs fit but also a developmental prospect.
1:10 - Reid can’t believe he is calling his new player, BoPete, so he confirms. “Am I calling you the right thing, here?”
1:26 - Reid encourages Keyes that he can play on the team no matter his draft round.
1:50 - Keyes reveals he was in a Chiefs cape while he was getting his haircut the night before the draft. Reid says that’s a good omen.
