Former New England wideout Chris Hogan spent 2019 with Carolina.
Devin McCourty has mapped out his route for Chris Hogan’s return to the New England Patriots.
And he did so before the 32-year-old wide receiver, who was a guest on the Double Coverage podcast Sunday night.
“I think it went so well the first time, I mean New England, we’re going to start tomorrow,” the Patriots captain told Hogan. “There’s going to be a ton of articles: ‘Devin McCourty …’ Everybody in New England, every time I say something on this show it becomes ...”
Something.
“Three years, three Super Bowls,” Hogan responded. “I’m just saying.”
Hogan spent the 2019 campaign with the Carolina Panthers. He caught eight passes for 67 yards over seven games and one start. Arthroscopic knee surgery led to a stint on injured reserve between the fall and winter.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound wideout had played into February during each of his previous three campaigns.
In 2016, Hogan signed a $12 million offer sheet with the Patriots as a restricted free agent. The product of Penn State lacrosse and Monmouth football went on to total 107 receptions for 1,651 yards and a dozen touchdowns in the regular season during his tenure.
Hogan would account for an additional 34 receptions for 542 yards and four scores in the postseason for New England.
McCourty continued his pitch.
“You heard it here first, man,” the safety said, alongside his twin brother and co-host, cornerback Jason McCourty. “Chris Hogan back to New England. We get him back there, we got 7-Eleven always open. We’re going to have a new quarterback, let’s bring an old target back. That’s what we do in New England. LeGarrette [Blount] came back. Next thing you know, 18 touchdowns. That’s what happens in New England. Deion Branch came back in 2010, touchdowns everywhere. So, New England, get a head start. Start your article now. It’s 8:47. Devin has said it.”
Time will tell whether head coach Bill Belichick hears it.
“Maybe Bill tuned into this right now,” Hogan joked.
Hogan made his initial NFL stops with the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills after going undrafted in 2011. He now awaits his next stop amid a spring without traditional visits, workouts and physicals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I mean, obviously I want to play football more than anything still,” Hogan said. “This whole thing going on, it’s kind of what it is. I’m just taking the time that I have with the family right now. That’s the most important thing that I get to do in the offseason. I know it’s going to be a little bit more time now. Who knows when we’re going to get back to it, but I’m just trying to stay as prepared as I can.”
New England’s current receiver depth chart includes Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, N’Keal Harry, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, Damiere Byrd, Matthew Slater, Quincy Adeboyejo and Devin Ross.
