Three questions about the Rams’ draft

Will there be more trades?

In exactly two weeks, the Rams will be preparing to make their first pick of the 2020 NFL draft, barring an unexpected trade up.

So, it’s the perfect time to delve into three burning questions about the Rams’ draft:

Is No. 52 a good spot for a running back? The Rams need to replace Todd Gurley in the offense. Sure, they have other backs. Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson will be in the mix. But the Rams also need a new threat in the backfield. The perfect fit may be LSU’s electric back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He can be an instant starter and he can catch the ball out of the backfield as Gurley did. If Edwards-Helaire or Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins is available at No. 52, the Rams may be tempted to take them there. The Rams’ offense needs a spark, but taking a running back here may be high because there are other pressing needs.

Will there be trades? The Rams went from five to seven draft picks this offseason thanks to a third-round comp pick and a second-round pick from Houston in Thursday’s Brandin Cooks’ deal. The Rams now have picks No. 52 and No. 57 (in Cooks’ deal) in the second round and picks No. 84 and No. 104. It’s not a bad comeback. The Rams now have the trade power to move up and down the draft board, whether they want to target a highly-ranked prospect or to compile more picks. Either way, I see some trades in Les Snead’s future. What else is new, right?

Can they fill big holes? That’s part of the trade question. If the Rams can get more picks in the top three rounds, they might be able to fill some of their holes created by this offseason’s exodus. But it won’t be easy. Any team that is banking on more than one or two rookies starting right away is playing a dangerous game. If the Rams can get three-four future starters out of this draft, it will be a great draft, especially considering they started the offseason with no first-round pick and just five picks total.
