Will the saga end tonight?
Another day, and another rumor surrounding the Trent Williams trade saga. The Buccaneers have been outed as a team that was interested in trading for Williams until they picked Tristan Wirfs last night. The Browns and Jets were also linked to a Trent Williams trade, but they picked Jedrick Wills Jr. and Mekhi Becton respectively.
That put all eyes on the Minnesota Vikings to make a play for Williams. It was reported that they made an offer of a Day 3 pick last week which was obviously turned down by the Redskins. They were reportedly still interested in trading for the 7-time Pro Bowler, but that could have changed today.
Julie Donaldson is reporting that the Vikings are no longer interested in trading for Trent Williams. She does name another team that is though. The Washington Post reported that the 49ers were a team that had inquired about picking up the 32-year old LT. Donaldson says Williams’ agent Vincent Taylor said an NFC team is interested, and it is believed to be the 49ers. This would reunite Williams with Kyle Shanahan who was the Redskins offensive coordinator when his father Mike Shanahan picked Williams with the 4th overall pick.
The 49ers only have 3 picks left in this year’s draft, so a trade would likely have to include players and/or future picks if it was going to get done. And Dan Snyder would have to approve of trading one of his best players over the last decade to a Shanahan. That could be the deal killer.
49ers 2020 Draft Picks
Round 5: 156th Overall (from Broncos) -
Round 6: 210th Overall -
Round 7: 217th Overall (from Lions) -
Trent Williams agent has said an NFC team is interested, believed to be 49ers - per sources. Makes sense. Kyle Shanahan was w/ the Redskins when Trent was drafted, Joe Staley is 35, want to win now. No deal has been made. Also, does not appear MINN has any interest at this time.
