Urban Meyer weighs in on Joe Burrow & battle with Dwayne Haskins at Ohio State

Haskins got the starting nod over Burrow at Ohio State, and the rest is history.

There was once a time when current NFL starter Dwayne Haskins and presumed No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow were on the same roster with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

After redshirting his first year at Ohio State in 2015, Burrow spent the next two years as a reserve behind starter J.T. Barrett, and then Haskins. Over the two years, he played in 10 games while completing 29/39 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns.

Haskins, meanwhile, redshirted his first year at Ohio State in 2016, the became the backup to Barrett, in 2017, completing 40/57 passes for 565 yards and four scores.

Once Barrett graduated, it was clear Haskins would be named the starting quarterback, so Burrow transferred to LSU in the summer of 2018. That same year, Haskins enjoyed a breakout season with the Buckeyes, leading him to enter the 2019 draft and be selected 15th overall by Washington.

Burrow, on the other hand, had a productive 2018 season, but his true emergence didn’t come until 2019 when he had arguably the greatest season a college quarterback has ever had, throwing 60 touchdowns, winning the Heisman, going 15-0 as a starter, and winning the national championship.

Now, Burrow is set to be the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft, while there are enough concerns with Haskins following an up-and-down rookie season that some believe Washington could replace him with another quarterback using the No. 2 overall pick.

What does the man who coached both Haskins and Burrow at Ohio State think about the two signal-callers?

In an interview with Profootballtalk, Meyer, the head coach at Ohio State from 2012-18, talked about why he picked Haskins over Burrow.

Dwayne Haskins is probably the best quarterback ever to play at Ohio State,” Meyer said.

“Joe was a little behind. You know why? Joe was also Mr. Ohio in basketball and they had a great team in the state championships, and he’s just one of those all-purpose tough guy leaders.

Joe Burrow is a no brainer. Absolute no brainer. Can he throw as accurately as Dwayne? He’s improved, but he wasn’t that way. But his leadership skills, his toughness, competitive — you talk about a competitive maniac, that’s who Joe Burrow is.”

Regardless of what happened at Ohio State, Meyer certainly sounds sold on Burrow at the next level, which is all that should really matter to the Bengals.
