What can the Rams do at kicker?

LA’s options for life after Greg Zuerlein

Before free agency started, we looked at what the Rams could do if they didn’t retain kicker Greg Zuerlein.

The thinking was the Rams were tight against the salary cap and that Zuerlein was coming off a bad season, so he could be on the go. Yes, that all developed as Zuerlein signed with the Dallas Cowboys last week.

Even though, Zuerlein is coming off a poor season, he had produced and the Rams have a lot of other needs and a tight salary-cap. So, now, it’s another hole for the Rams.

Where can they turn?

It was a week a free agent class to begin with. New England’s Stephen Gostkowski was cut and he may be the best option. Yet, he was injured last season and ineffective when healthy. Plus, he’s 36.

Other free agent kickers include Adam Vinatieri, Nick Folk and Ryan Succop. None of them, though, are overly attractive options at this point.

The Rams could turn to the draft, but they only have six draft picks and other needs. But they might need to invest in a kicker in the sixth or seventh round.

Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship is widely considered the top kicker available in the draft. He might be worth a sixth-round pick. Other draft prospects include Jet Toner of Stanford and Tyler Bass of Georgia Southern.

With Zuerlein gone, add kicker to the Rams’ list of needs.
