3 Raiders underdogs to watch in 2020

Keelan Doss could be ready to take next step this season

On Wednesday, we looked at 11 current Raiders who went from underdogs to key contributors on the 2020 Raiders squad.

As we continue “Underdog Week” at SB Nation, I’m focusing on three players on the roster who haven’t made a big impact yet ... but who have a chance to develop.

Here they are, presented in alphabetical order:

Lester Cotton

Lester Cotton:
Cotton is the other guy. Eight Raiders played in the 2019 National Championship game between Clemson and Alabama: Clelin Ferrell, Trayvon Mullen, Hunter Renfrow, Tanner Muse and John Simpson played for the winning Clemson Tigers. Then Josh Jacobs, Henry Ruggs III and ... Cotton represented the Crimson Tide in the game.

The other seven Raiders are secured a spot on the 2020 roster but Cotton will have to fight for a spot. But don’t discount the guard, who was on the practice squad as an undrafted rookie last year. The Raiders are looking for young offensive linemen to develop, therefore, Cotton has a real chance to make the roster this season.

Keelan Doss

Keelan Doss:
The 2018 undrafted free agent from small-school UC Davis was a Hard Knocks star last year, after which he was cut and went to Jacksonville. Doss did end up coming back to the Raiders and he had 11 catches for 133 yards last season. I expect Doss to get a long look in training camp this year. The Raiders are much deeper at receiver in 2020 than they were last year, but I do think Doss has a chance to stick around as the No. 6 receiver and continue to develop.

Justin Phillips

Justin Phillips:
The linebacker from Oklahoma State signed with the Dallas Cowboys last year as an undrafted free agent. Two days after being cut by the Cowboys, the Raiders signed Phillips to their practice squad. He was promoted for four games and played a reserve role, but he was lost for the season with a knee injury in October. The Raiders ended up releasing him. Phillips was re-signed earlier this month and the Raiders have room to develop young linebackers. Keep an eye on this underdog.
