49ers 90-in-90: OT Shon Coleman 15 Breaking down the 90 players on the 49ers offseason roster in 90 posts (over 90 or so days). Today is offensive tackle Shon Coleman
The San Francisco 49ers acquired Shon Coleman for a 2019 seventh-round pick in a trade with the Cleveland Browns on August 31, 2018. Coleman was inactive in each game in 2018 and was placed on injured reserve in 2019 after being injured in the preseason after only a few plays against the Cowboys. Coleman has 16 starts in the NFL, and that experience is why the 49ers extended Coleman for another year back in March.
Coleman will battle Justin Skule for the 49ers swing tackle job. As we found out last year, that’s an important position. In a dream world, neither Coleman or Skule step on the field in 2020 unless it’s garbage time.

Coleman’s 2020 cap number is $962,000. Looking at his contract on Over the Cap, his base salary of $825,000 isn’t guaranteed as the 49ers can release Coleman and save $825,000. The remaining prorated bonus of $137,500 would be dead money.
What to expect in 2020
Pro Football Focus graded Coleman as a 61 overall when he started with the Browns in 2017. That is below average. He graded a bit better as a rookie, but he also only played 62 snaps. Kyle Shanahan saw a fit in Coleman early on, which is why the team felt comfortable bringing him back on a one-year extension. For a backup, Coleman is a very good pass protector. I don’t think the 49ers are interested in testing that out for a full season.
Odds on making the roster
For the second year in a row, Coleman will need to beat out Skule to make the roster. Physically, Coleman is superior. He has the experience as well. Unless Skule plays out of his mind, Coleman will be on the roster Week 1. Depending on where Colton McKivitiz ends up, Coleman may have to beat him out as well. If the competition is close, you have to imagine the 49ers will roll with the younger player. Coleman has to show he can stay healthy and is fully recovered as well. Nobody wants to talk about the swing tackle job, but the 49ers will have good competition.
