Seven spots too low
The 49ers have remained one of the only teams in the NFL to truly let their original look remain mostly-intact since the team was founded in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference. That determination to stick with the classic look has paid off over the years as the Niners have constantly been in discussions centered on the best uniforms in the NFL.
On Thursday, a trio of writers from Complex Sports got together to rank every NFL team’s uniforms from worst to first. Unsurprisingly, the 49ers’ threads came in at #8 on the list. Here’s what the authors had to say about the ranking:
“The Niners have underrated great uniforms and should never mess with them. Scarlet red jersey with white numbers, gold pants, and a gold helmet featuring the interlocking SF logo. As smart and simple, a combination as it is classically sublime.”
Originally, the 49ers did not incorporate gold into their uniforms for the first 18 years of the franchise’s history. From 1946-1963, the team actually used silver as one of their three colors, along with crimson and white. Prior to the 1964 season, the team decided to replace the silver with “49ers gold.”
Ever since the team hasn’t strayed far from their golden domes and their gold pants, only minor details have taken place over the last five to six decades, mostly revolving around the stripes on the sleeves and pants and the face mask going red for some time, but the meat of the uniform has stayed mostly unchanged.
