This is quite the underwhelming list.
When Steve Young retired at the end of the 1999 season, it marked the end of a golden era for the San Francisco 49ers. With the legendary Joe Montana preceding Young as the team’s quarterback, the Niners didn’t have to worry about the most important position in football for 20 years.
Repeated concussions forced Young walk away from the game and the search was on to find his heir apparent. It didn’t go well.
Josh Schrock of NBC Bay Area looked back at all of the players San Francisco either drafted or signed to become next great 49ers QB, and the list is a reminder of just how bad the Niners were after Young’s retirement.
Here is the list of QBs: Jeff Garcia, Jim Druckenmiller, Giovanni Carmazzi, Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, Cody Pickett, Chris Weinke, J.T. O’Sullivan, Shaun Hill, Trent Dilfer, Alex Smith, Troy Smith, Colin Kaeprnick.
Wow, that is bad.
Carmazzi was a complete and utter disaster who didn’t take a snap with the team after being drafted in the third-round of the 2000 NFL Draft.
Garcia played well in the 2001 and 2002 seasons, leading the Niners to a 22-10 record and back-to-back playoff appearances. But, like many other quarterbacks, his relationship with receiver Terrell Owens soured, and the team released Garcia after missing the playoffs in 2003.
San Francisco thought it had its QB of the future when it took Alex Smith No. 1 overall in 2005, but thanks to head coached Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary, plus a revolving door of offensive coordinators, Smith didn’t find his footing until Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach in 2011.
We all know how fast Kaepernick’s star fizzled out after a tantalizing couple of years. We were then forced to watch Blaine Gabbert, Brian Hoyer and C.J. Bethard try their hands, before the 49ers thankfully traded for Jimmy Garoppolo.
