And no, old videos of NFC Championship Games don’t count
This is going to be the last. . .I think. . .in our series of posts about moments in sports that have made you cry, and I’m going to take this in a slightly different direction.
There are a ton of great sports movies that have come out over the years. Just about every sport that you can think of has several pretty great movies associated with it. But has a sports movie ever moved you to tears?
I want to offer up two such examples, one football-related and one not.
The football movie is one that came out about five years before yours truly was even born, but one that I’ve watched quite a few times. Surprisingly, it was an ABC “Movie of the Week” back in 1971 and not a really big-time production, but it’s made its way into the pantheon of great football movies. I’m talking, of course, of Brian’s Song, and specifically this speech from Billy Dee Williams, who played the role of Gale Sayers in the movie. The speech comes after Sayers is given the “George S. Halas Most Inspirational Player” Award, which he then dedicates to Piccolo, who had been stricken with cancer.
“I love Brian Piccolo, and I’d like all of you to love him, too. And tonight, when you hit your knees, please ask God to love him.”
The other one is from a movie that’s on the short list of the greatest baseball films of all time, Field of Dreams. If you haven’t seen the movie, it stars Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer that builds a baseball field on his Iowa farm. Ray had differences with his father, John, and never reconciled things with him prior to his passing. At the end of the movie. . .and, really, you need to see it if you haven’t, because I can’t do it the justice it deserves. . .Ray is reunited with a younger version of his father and given the opportunity to make things right.
“You wanna have a catch?”
Those are my contributions to this. Are there sports movies that have moved you to cry over the years? If so, feel free to share them in the comments.
And, as stipulated in the bit under the title, videos of old Minnesota Vikings NFC Championship Games don’t count.
