The big offensive lineman will try for the second time in as many years to make the Bills’ roster

The Buffalo Bills boast an offensive line where the majority of the participants from the 2019 NFL season return to the squad in 2020. They even have so many returning players among their offensive line group that a player who started 2019 with the team and then went somewhere else is even back in Buffalo in 2020.

In today’s edition of “91 players in 91 days,” we profile that unusual “returning” player.

Financial situation (per Spotrac): McGhin begins his second go-round with the Bills on a one-year contract, which totals $675,000. None of that money is guaranteed.

2019 Recap: McGhin spent the offseason with Buffalo, but he was placed on injured reserve on August 20 after suffering an ankle injury. The Bills released him from IR on August 24. He signed with the Carolina Panthers, making the reverse journey in the typical Carolina-to-Buffalo pipeline. The Panthers signed McGhin to their practice squad on November 12. They promoted him to the active roster on November 25, and he appeared in two games, playing on a total of seven special teams snaps. Carolina placed him on injured reserve on December 19 thanks to another ankle injury. He was released by the Panthers on March 18 of this year.

Positional outlook: McGhin joins a crowded offensive line group, but since the team lists him as an offensive lineman, it means that they think he has a chance to stick at multiple positions. He was primarily a tackle last year, but he played center, guard, and right tackle while in college. McGhin is similar to Ryan Bates in that he can essentially line up anywhere. Buffalo’s offensive line group also includes Dion Dawkins, Quinton Spain, Mitch Morse, Jon Feliciano, Cody Ford, Ty Nsekhe, Spencer Long, Marquel Harrell, Daryl Williams, Trey Adams, Evan Boehm, Victor Salako, Brandon Walton, and Ike Boettger.

2020 Offseason: Nothing new to report.

2020 Season outlook: McGhin is likely a camp body—a convenient signing for Buffalo given the truncated offseason while dealing with a pandemic. It’s good for McGhin, as well, since he’s already familiar with the offense and the calls, so it gives him a better chance to hit the ground running when the preseason begins. If there are some injuries in front of him, McGhin could make the roster in the same role Bates served as the team’s “super-sub” along the offensive line. However, it’s far more likely that McGhin is auditioning for his next team.
