Broncos roster review: Quarterback Brett Rypien

NFL: Denver Broncos-Training Camp Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Will Brett Rypien be able to make the cut for the Denver Broncos roster this season?

Every quarterback on the Denver Broncos’ roster got to take a shot last season...other than Brett Rypien. From the outside looking in, he’s a long shot to make the roster in 2020.

#4 Brett Rypien

Age: 23 Height: 6’2” Weight: 202 lbs

College: Boise State

The Good

He’s been on the team for a season and has exposure to how the NFL quarterback room works. Honestly, the fact that he didn’t see the field last season before Drew Lock took over is probably good for his chances in the future.

The Bad

His lack of arm strength was a knock coming out of college and the preseason action I saw him in didn’t make me disagree. He looked like a rookie learning the ropes and was mostly forgettable in the play on the field late in the preseason games.

Final Word

Honestly, I feel like Rypien is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Denver Bronco quarterback situation has been an absolute mess and this team is desperate for a legitimate starter. That means a young undrafted guy like Rypien doesn’t have much of a shot.

Even this offseason the Broncos signed Jeff Driskel to join the quarterback room and that move alone likely means doom for Rypien’s future with the team. The Broncos want a sound backup behind young Drew Lock and that’s just not a description we can put on Rypien.

Hopefully he’s able to put some good tape out there this preseason and get picked up by another more quarterback needy team that is looking for a backup with potential.
