Since arriving in New England as a first-round draft pick in 2010, Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty has been one of the cornerstones of the team’s defense as well as a leader in the team’s locker room. His impact extends beyond the gridiron, however: McCourty has also been actively involved in the community by supporting causes from criminal justice reform, to public education, to the fight against sickle cell disease.
The 32-year-old also is an active supporter of Boston Uncornered, an initiative aiming to redirect “the entrepreneurial, networking and leadership skills of gang involved youth [...] from violence and incarceration to obtain a college credential and family-sustaining wage” with the goal of driving positive change in local neighborhoods. As a result of his involvement with the cause, McCourty will be honored at an online fundraiser next week.
The event will take place on June 9, and will see the Patriots defender be named “2020 Uncornered Champion of the Year.”
“It’s been cool for me to see first hand some of the things they do. It’s opened my eyes how beneficial this can be in different communities,” McCourty recently told the Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian. “Paying former gang members to go to school, it struck me that they were doing something different, going against the grain to try to create change.
“From there, I got to speak with different people and fully understood the mission, giving men and women the opportunity to have money in their pockets, and not have to worry about where they’re going to get their next meal [...] so they can actually do some of the things people with money can focus on, like going to school, raising kids the right way,” he continued. “Once I got to be involved, and got a closer look, it was amazing to me the work they were doing.”
The honor will come just three weeks after the team captain and his twin brother, fellow Patriots defensive back Jason McCourty, were nominated for the prestigious Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award due to their work in the community.
