Falcoholinks: Important resources to support the Black community

Anti-Racism Protests Held In U.S. Cities Nationwide Photo by Natasha Moustache/Getty Images

No justice, no peace.

The nation — and the world — has been rightly rocked by the video of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police in Minneapolis. We watched the marches and protests in the wake of Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri. We watched the marches and protests in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death in Baltimore, Maryland. We watched the marches and protests in the wake of Eric Garner’s death in Staten Island, New York. We watched the marches and protests in the wake of Sandra Bland’s death in Hempstead, Texas.

The same for Tamir Rice. And Walter Scott. And Oscar Grant. And Philando Castile. And Alton Sterling.

I could go on and on. It’s nauseating to think of the list of names. There have been marches and protests for years, but this one feels like a veritable inflection point — a boiling-over of a country sick and tired of institutionalized racism and police brutality in the United States.

George Floyd will be laid to rest in his home city of Houston, Texas, tomorrow, but the marches and protests will continue. Today’s Falcoholinks is different, as we’re amplifying organizations, outlets, and fundraisers that will provide resources to the black community and to the marchers and protesters in the street raising their fists and voices for systemic change and racial equality. Black Lives Matter.

For those looking for the Falcons-centric links, don’t worry: They’ll be back tomorrow. In the meantime, I’m hoping everyone can find something to support below, either with your dollars or your voices.

Matt Ryan’s fundraiser for the Atlanta Black Community

The Falcons quarterback donated $500K of his own money to benefit the black community in Atlanta, and he’s set a goal for $2 million. Let’s exceed that!

George Floyd Memorial Fund

Organized by George’s brother, Philonise, this GoFundMe is soliciting donations to assist in funeral costs, travel and lodging, mental health care, and legal fees as the family seeks Justice for George. Donations will also be allocated to George Floyd’s estate to benefit his children.

Black Lives Matter

A movement that emerged in the aftermath of Trayvon Martin’s death whose aim is to eradicate white supremacy and state-sanctioned violence.

Minnesota Freedom Fund

Countless individuals in Minnesota have been taken into custody despite peacefully exercising their first amendment right to protest. The Minnesota Freedom Fund is accepting donations for bail.

Southern Poverty Law Center

Founded in 1971, the SPLC is an advocacy group that monitors hate groups throughout the United States, and assists educators with teaching tolerance to the children in their schools.

BEAM

The Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective works to address emotional healing and mental health in black communities.

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund

A legal organization that fights for racial justice. For over 75 years the LDF has worked tirelessly in courts to achieve equality.

The National Association of Black Journalists

Consider a donation to an organization that supports black journalists and diversity in media.
