The NFL Network’s DeAngelo Hall thinks so.
Despite being 19-5 as a starter, some believe San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hasn’t proven enough in the NFL.
Garoppolo’s stats from 2019 were good, considering it was his first full-year as a starter in the league. Jimmy G’s 2018 season was cut short due to a serious knee injury, that required him to spend much of last summer rehabbing in preparation for Week 1.
The 28-year-old completed 69.1% of his passes for 3,978 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system.
Some of Garoppolo’s haters got ammunition when he struggled in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, finishing just 3-for-11 for 36 yards, and a 2.8 passer rating.
Although he helped lead the team to a 13-3 record in 2019, and has won 80% of his games as a starter since entering the league, he never seems to silence the doubters.
Current NFL Network analyst, and former player DeAngelo Hall chimed in during a segment, saying the fact that the Niners’ offense is so good is detrimental for Jimmy G:
“This Kyle Shanahan offense doesn’t require you to do a whole heckuva lot ... Jimmy G, can he make every throw? Yes, he can. He showed me a lot last season. I think, to me the biggest hang up is this team’s almost too good sometimes. Because when you can impose your will on the other team by just running the football, and not really having your offense throw the football down field.”
San Francisco had the No. 8 ranked passing offense in DVOA last season, with the total offense coming in seventh, per Football Outsiders. Hall also said he thinks Garoppolo needed to be better on the deep ball, although Pro Football Focus had Jimmy G as the eighth best passer on deep balls of more than 20 yards down field in 2019.
The 49ers weren’t such an offensive juggernaut that you could sub in Blaine Gabbert, and still expect to win 13 games with the current roster.
If anything, Garoppolo needs to improve his footwork and consistency. His reads are frustrating at times, and he forces throws into tight windows, but I do believe those aspects of his game will improve as he gains experience.
