Minnesota Vikings News and Links: June 15, 2020

NFL: NFC Wild Card-Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Another wonderful work week has begun!

Happy Monday, everyone!

I hope y’all had a fun and relaxing weekend. We had another hurricane here in North Dakota, the insane winds began about an hour prior to quitting time on Friday, and didn’t subside until after bedtime last night. Now that I’m sitting in the office, it’s beautiful. I must have managed to offend some weather god at some point in my past.

Is anyone else getting REALLY anxious for training camp? Normally, it isn’t much of a thought in my mind, Even though I’ve always enjoyed visiting training camp and watching the guys battle for positions, I’m always so busy with summer and with fishing that I don’t give training camp much thought until it’s here. This year, with the plague and all the other garbage going on in the world, I’ve been anxious for training camp to get here. Let’s hope it happens soon so the Vikings can begin their run to the Superb Owl. What? No, I’m not drunk. I quit drinking.

Around the DN since our last open thread:

Chris shared the ESPN report where Dalvin Cook felt ‘disrespected’ by the Vikings offer. I have a couple of thoughts on this.

  1. When I hear of contract negotiations, I always think of the scene on A Christmas Story where Ralphie is talking about his dad’s reputation as a tough negotiator and a lowballer. I don’t know that anyone should feel disrespected or surprised by an opening offer, whether it be a low offer by the team, or a high demand by the player, it’s all part of the negotiation.
  2. How accurate are these reports? When I read stories that begin with “I’m told”, but then there is no source listed as to who did the telling, I’m suspicious whether the statement is accurate. I think the same thing whenever a source is listed as “an anonymous source” or “an NFL executive”, I’m beginning to think those terms are only used when a reporter THINKS something might have happened, but he/she has no evidence to support that thought.
  3. If he DID happen to say that he felt disrespected, that statement may just be a negotiation tactic (and an effective one) being used by Dalvin in order to sway the final price a little bit in his favor.
  4. I think they’ll come to an agreement prior to training camp.

Other Vikings/NFL news, and random oddities and annoyances:

From FoxSports, Mitch Trubisky is not conceding his starting QB job to Nick Foles. Well, I guess it wouldn’t be very good for his career if he just came out before training camp and said “yeah, I’ll just let Nick have the job”. In the end, whether he concedes the job or loses it in training camp, the end result will be the same. Might as well look like you went down fighting.

At CBS Sports, Jason LaCanfora shares some thoughts and possible solutions for Dalvin Cook and the Vikings.

We come to today’s media selection:

For those of you poor souls who haven’t seen A Christmas Story, here’s the scene I referenced above. Also, go watch A Christmas Story....right now. Enjoy!

Again, we all know the rules, but in case someone is new:

-No discussion of politics or religion
-No feeding of the trolls
-Leave the gender hatred at the door
-Keep the bad language to a minimum (using the spoiler tags, if you must)
-Speaking of which, if discussing a newer show or movie, please use spoiler tags-
-No pictures that could get someone fired or in serious trouble with their employer
-If you can’t disagree in a civil manner, feel free to go away
-While navigating the open thread, just assume it’s sarcasm.

With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up & tie one on. Don’t wash your hands, touch each other’s faces often, and go ahead and try the finger food.
