The New England Patriots’ coaching staff has seen some considerable turnover since the end of the 2019 season, and one move apparently included adding a new assistant: according to a recent report by ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots have hired veteran coach Tyler Hughes to work as a coaching assistant. While not yet official, the expectation is that Hughes will primarily be used on the offensive side of the ball given his background.
Hughes may not have been on an NFL staff before, but he does bring plenty of experience to the table. After starting his coaching career at Murray High School in Utah back in 2003, he joined Snow College the following year — first as wide receivers and tight ends coach, and later as offensive coordinator and head coach. During his two seasons serving in the latter role, Hughes and his teams won 20 of their 24 combined games.
In 2013, however, he left the school again to take on a job as quality control assistant on Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State. One year later, he became head coach at Minot State. While his success was limited during his three years with the Beavers — he went 5-28 as the school’s head coach — the team did show some positive developments: Minot State tied the most wins in a single season during its Division-II era when it went 3-8 in 2016.
After stepping down from the position following his third season, Hughes took over as coach at Bountiful High School in Utah. In two seasons with him at the helm, the Braves went a combined 9-13 and made the playoffs once. Earlier this year, however, he resigned — a move that paved the way for him to now join the Patriots in what is the highest-profile gig of his 18-year career as a football coach.
Adding Hughes is just the latest in a series of moves made by the Patriots this year.
After losing offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia to retirement and special teams/wide receivers coach Joe Judge as well as defensive line coach Bret Bielema to the New York Giants, the Patriots had to move some pieces around to address the vacancies — from Cole Popovich and Carmen Bricillo filling Scarnecchia’s old role, to Mick Lombardi moving to the wide receiver position, to Cam Achord taking over special teams.
Furthermore, New England looked outside the organization for some help as well: Jedd Fisch was brought in to support the development of the team’s quarterbacks, while Joe Houston and Vinnie Sunseri were added to assist Achord. Hughes now becomes the latest outside hire to join Bill Belichick’s staff.
