Earlier this offseason, the Seattle Seahawks added former NFL running back Alonzo Highsmith to be one of their consultants leading up to this year’s draft. Now they’ve given him a full-time role in the front office.

ESPN’s Brady Henderson reported on Tuesday that Highsmith will take up a position as a personnel executive in their scouting department. Highsmith previously served as Vice President of Player Personnel for the Cleveland Browns, and was a senior personnel executive for the Green Bay Packers from 2012-2017.

Unbeknownst to me, Highsmith also had a stint as a professional boxer after he retired from pro football. Apparently he knocked out former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau in 1996, and went to a draw with a guy named Reggie Miller in 1998, but evidently that’s not the former Indiana Pacer.

General manager John Schneider has a long history with Highsmith, who worked as a scout for the Packers in 1999 prior to his big promotion to personnel executive. Schneider was part of Green Bay’s front office from 2002-2009 before he was hired by the Seahawks in 2010.

“‘Zo’ is like a big brother to me,” Schneider said at the NFL Combine (via Seattle Times). “It’s not a reflection on our staff at all and the job they’re doing because our staff is awesome. These guys were not in our last draft meetings, but they will be in our next meetings – the meetings closest to the draft. Having a pair of two experienced eyes – both of them have different connections in different ways, too. It’s pretty cool.”

Reunited and it feels so good.
