Welcome to the Den today, were we ask if there is, indeed, a cure for the Summertime Blues...

THE DAILY SPONGIE SPECIAL

This one’s by request from Xmaslovechild, Blue Cheer from 1968. The tune kicks ass.

My favorite tune from that era (albeit a couple of years later) is very much an “acquired taste” and a lot of folks give me the “what in the name of St. Papa Bear Halas is that!!!” look... but here it is, a song (this is my favorite version) I listen to more than is quite right... it was so long the one song took both sides of an LP record (they broke the tune in the middle).

BEAR DOWN, CHICAGO BEARS, BEAR DOWN!!!!

BEARRRSSSS

Bears GM Ryan Pace anxious to see what he’s got - Chicago Sun-Times - “I think our team’s in a good state of mind,” Pace said in an interview with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “Everybody’s a little pissed off. Everybody has a chip on their shoulder. And I would love to be carrying that momentum through the OTAs and mini-camps.”

Chicago’s NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB coaches at all-time worst? - Chicago Sun-Times - With all due respect to Matt Nagy and his terrific rookie campaign, the head coaching landscape with the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs and White Sox has rarely, if ever, looked so bleak.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace talks with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio - ChicagoBears.com - In a video interview with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Bears general manager Ryan Pace discussed the team’s virtual offseason program, rebounding from last season and more.

Why Anthony Miller Can Hold a Key to Bears Offense - SI.com - Anthony Miller can hold the key to the Bears offense in 2020, unless Matt Nagy completely revamps what he has been doing.

Ryan Pace: “Last Season Was Unacceptable” – On Tap Sports Net - Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace recently joined the PFT PM Podcast to discuss the previous season and give some clarity to the team’s direction going into 2020. Pace has kept relatively quiet dating back to last season when Chicago finished with an underwhelming 8-8 record. Pace elaborated on this, giving some insight into the current vibe in the locker room.

With QB battle brewing, it’s Matt Nagy who’s on the spot - Chicago Sun-Times - The lesson of previous open competitions is that there really was no difference — Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman; Jim Miller or Shane Matthews. The quarterback didn’t make the offense. The offense made the quarterback.

White Sox’ Rick Renteria, Chicago’s best coach? That’s what voters say - Chicago Sun-Times - Matt Nagy, who led the Bears to a 12-4 record in 2018, might’ve seemed a likely favorite among coaches and managers in the Big Four pro leagues. Instead, his candidacy knuckled off course and, in the end, double doinked.

Matt Nagy, Chicago Bears learning from LA Clippers coach Doc Rivers - NBC Sports Chicago - Doc Rivers was one of the most popular guest speakers the Bears hosted under stay-at-home orders, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Leadership lessons Ryan Pace learned from time with Sean Payton, Saints - NBC Sports Chicago - From Katrina to coronavirus, Pace has experience leading a team through a crisis.

Nick Foles’ familiarity with Bears coaches, system important to Ryan Pace - NBC Sports Chicago - Ryan Pace appeared on “PFT PM” and elaborated on several of the reasons the Bears decided to trade for Nick Foles.

POLISH SAUSAGE

DeSean Jackson: Players should wear microphones if stadiums are empty - ProFootballTalk - If the NFL has to play some games in empty stadiums this season, Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson thinks the league should take advantage of the audio responsibilities.

George Kittle is right to seek something more than tight end money - ProFootballTalk - The 49ers and tight end George Kittle aren’t close on a new deal because Kittle and his agent want the player to be paid as something more than a tight end. There’s a good reason for that position, because he is.

KNOW THINE ENEMY

Kyle Rudolph participates in celebrity bike event - Daily Norseman - And helps to get one million meals for the Food Bank for New York City

The Packers have no high-profile WR draft pick, but competition alone should provide a lift - Acme Packing Company - The Packers will lean on a mix of new and second-year WRs to create needed competition at the position in training camp. Ken’s Note: I though the Nile was a river that ran through Egypt. Turns out the river’s really spelled DeNial and it flows through Green Bay.

Packers guard Lane Taylor takes a $3 million pay cut, per report - Acme Packing Company - Green Bay might keep around the veteran for 2020 after all.

Which team has the best secondary in the NFC North? - Pride Of Detroit - Are the Lions making the case already? Ken's Note: I love how delusional Lions fans get, especially after getting rid of their best two players in the secondary. As Jacob Infante pointed out recently, there are only two safeties in the entire league that held completion percentages against them to under 58 percent in the entire league last year. Both play for Chicago. Two All pros in the defensive backfield and three Pro-Bowl players with five combined appearances? Again, Chicago. Yet they rate us last behind a secondary that has exactly one Pro-Bowl appearance combined, a second year starter who wasn't very good last year at Safety, a rookie (we are both looking at a rookie)... yeah, I don't think so. But then again, Lions fans.
