Timmy Jernigan not joining the Texans is a relevant development for the Eagles

Comp pick update.

It was just over two months ago when news first emerged regarding the Houston Texans signing former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. But apparently that April 1 report ended up being an unintentional April Fools’ Day joke.

Jernigan is now indicating he’s not going to Houston after all. The following screenshot comes from his Instagram story:

This development does not come as a total shock. There had been some uncertainty about Jernigan’s status since the team wasn’t listing him on their official roster page despite the fact Bill O’Brien previously acknowledged the signing. Strange situation.

Jernigan’s deal with the Texans falling through is not welcomed news for the Eagles. He was previously projected to count towards Philadelphia’s compensatory pick formula for the 2021 NFL Draft, as seen in this graphic from Over The Cap:

Jernigan signing with another team at this point won’t count towards the Eagles’ comp pick formula since we’re past April 27. Philly can now only max out at three comp picks instead of four.

I could be wrong but I don’t think we’ll see Jernigan land back in Philly. “Big Money Tim” was a fun guy to have in the locker room but there are significant concerns about his durability. He played just 15.5% of the Eagles’ defensive snaps over the past two seasons after nearly suffering a career-ending injury during the 2018 offseason.

Not to mention the Eagles are already pretty loaded at defensive tackle with Fletcher Cox, Malik Jackson, and Javon Hagrave in the fold. The team is also returning young guys like Hassan Ridgeway, Anthony Rush, Albert Huggins, and Bruce Hector. Oh, and the Eagles gave undrafted rookie free agent Raequan Williams the second highest guaranteed money figure out of their 13 UDFA signings.

Here’s hoping Jernigan catches on elsewhere, preferably with a team that’s not especially unlikable.
