With training camp nearing, let’s take a look at the latest 53-man roster prediction.
Here’s where things get really interesting. Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb will steal the show during the regular season, but during camp and the preseason, all eyes will be on the competition for the backup receiver spots.
Veterans Devin Smith, Jon’Vea Johnson, Cedrick Wilson, Ventell Bryant, Noah Brown and Tevin Jones, along with undrafted rookies Aaron Parker, Stephen Guidry and Kendrick Rogers, will compete for the fourth and fifth (and possibly sixth) receiver spots on the roster.
Given the lack of on-field activities this offseason, the undrafted rookies are at a big disadvantage heading into camp because they’ll have much less time to acclimate to the speed and skill of the NFL game. It was hard enough with a full offseason, so the difficulty only increases tenfold when there are no on-field offseason team activities allowed.
Wilson is probably the best all-around receiver among the veterans, which is why he’s one of the early favorites to earn a spot on the 53. Johnson and Smith are the only veterans with legitimate field-stretching ability, but I believe Johnson’s overall route-running ability will give him an edge as long as his hands are more consistent.
After Wilson and Johnson, Bryant is the next best choice because he has special teams ability to go with intriguing upside as a receiver due to his size and contested-catch skills.

Seems very unlikely that the Cowboys would move Prescott.
Under the franchise tag, the Dallas Cowboys have control of Dak Prescott‘s rights for one more season. What happens beyond the 2020 season is anyone’s guess, but if the Cowboys are weighing other options it might not even get to that point. That’s because they could actually consider trading No. 4 before it ever gets that far.
Now, let me make this perfectly clear before we get started. I’m a fan of Dak Prescott and I think he will be a member of the organization until his career comes to an end. However, that doesn’t mean the Dallas Cowboys shouldn’t weigh all of their options right now and that includes possibly trading away their franchise QB this year.
Unless the Dallas Cowboys can convince Dak Prescott to sign a team friendly contract extension next year, they could find themselves facing some serious salary-cap problems. It’s unlikely Prescott is going to sign anything team friendly, otherwise that would have already happened. That puts the Cowboys in a tough situation, which makes a trade a very real possibility.

So where does this leave McGovern with the 2020 Cowboys? With the departure of Frederick, McGovern is in a pretty decent situation to earn himself a significant role.
Plenty of signs have pointed to Joe Looney to take over the duties as the team’s starting center, considering he replaced Frederick when he had to miss 2018. The spot is not guaranteed and given McGovern’s college experience at playing center, it gives him a shot to compete for this along side rookie 2020 draft pick Tyler Biadasz.
Right guard Zack Martin is one of the best guards in the entire league so that spot is filled however on the left side the Cowboys might have some decisions to make. Williams has yet to do anything to turn any heads or raise any eyebrows so McGovern once again could be in line for some friendly competition to see the field as a starter in 2020.
The versatility to play both center and guard alone gives Connor McGovern a very good chance to compete to become a known face on an already notable Cowboys offensive line. Add one year of learning from the sidelines and being in good health has McGovern primed to make his sophomore season one to remember and one to remind the Cowboys why they selected him in the first place.

Nick: I think the uncertainty of everything going on made it difficult to sign a player — unless maybe you’ve got a sure thing in Mahomes, who has already delivered an MVP and a Super Bowl. But for those not doing 10-year deals, yes it is most definitely a weird time for both sides. Now me personally, I think I would take the long-term deal offered if I was a player. Who knows what the cap will look like next year and so if there was a chance to lock up a long-term deal in the middle of a pandemic, I would’ve done that.

The tight end position is one of the most difficult in regard to transitioning from the college game to the NFL level. Not only do tight ends need to learn complex route schemes, but they are often asked to understand blocking in both the run and passing games. Considering all the variables, it’s extremely rare to see any rookie tight end break out.
Some tight ends — such as George Kittle, Mark Andrews, Travis Kelce and Zach Ertz — broke out in their second seasons, but others needed even more time before they became useful fantasy assets. Austin Hooper, Darren Waller and Tyler Higbee all broke out in their third or fourth seasons. In fantasy football drafts, the elite tight ends come with high draft capital, and there are only so many of them. If you miss out at the beginning of your draft, it’s crucial that you snag one or two of these late-round targets who have shown the upside to suggest they can make the leap.
In this series of articles, I’m looking at the breakout potential at the tight end position with a focus on players entering their second, third and fourth seasons. I’ll take a look at their current situations to see if they have a clear path to targets and then analyze what they’ve done in the NFL to this point to determine whether they’ve shown the upside to break out in 2020.

Stephen Jones has long referred to roster construction in the NFL as a business that takes up every hour of every day across the year, and while the season is scheduled to resume in about two months, that hardly means that the Cowboys should shoo away any opportunity to better their roster. What opportunities are there?
Less than a month ago it was reported that the Cowboys were one of two teams atop Jadeveon Clowney’s wish list (the New Orleans Saints being the other) and he remains on the open market. Adding him with their cap space could be problematic, though.
How interested is Dallas in adding talent at this point? According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the answer is, at the very least, mildly. Discussing the Dak Prescott situation on the latest Rapsheet and Friends podcast, Pelissero noted that the Cowboys are interested in adding “another piece or two” before the season but that Prescott’s now-fully guaranteed contract could make that a bit more challenging.

Season after season, we see players entering their final contract year in Dallas put up career performances. Entering the 2020 season, there are several candidates to choose from. But our choice is safety Xavier Woods.
Woods is likely a stone-cold lock to win one of the starting safety roles as Dallas did little to upgrade the position in the offseason. So you know he’s getting the opportunities to excel. And entering his fourth year with the Cowboys, it’s time for the former sixth-rounder to take the next step in his development and prove he’s worth a long-term extension.
Xavier Woods has started 29 games over the past two years in Dallas and has seen a steady rise in both tackles and total takeaways. Currently scheduled to become a free agent next offseason, the 24-year old has a new coaching staff to impress and this season to do so. Pressure makes diamonds, right?
