Gary Zimmerman on the 2020 Broncos? Yes. Please.

Broncos V Chiefs

You can’t go wrong with one of the best left tackles to ever play in the NFL to take from the past and put on the current roster. Of course, Champ Bailey would look good, too.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

There’s always a balance between history and nostalgia.

You don’t want to live in the past and lose sight of the present. With sports, it’s a little bit different. It’s the history and tradition that makes an organization what it is. The moments and players come to define a team.

The Denver Broncos are rich with history and tradition, so any chance to travel back in time ... you don’t have to ask me twice.

Earlier this week, Joe Rowles asked the MHR staff a simple, yet incredibly fun question: Aside from quarterback, which one former Broncos player would you take and put on the 2020 roster? To get this out of the way, there isn’t a wrong answer. About the only people who fail to see that Denver has been blessed with some of the best players in AFL/NFL history are the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters.

In terms of the current makeup of the Broncos’ roster, I went with Gary Zimmerman. He’s one of the best left tackles to ever play in the NFL. I have no doubt that the Hall of Famer would thrive in today’s league. Zimmerman would become the immediate anchor at left tackle and increase the likelihood Drew Lock turns into the player everyone expects and hopes.

I also think about what he would bring to the offensive line as a whole. Zimmerman would serve as the leader for the unit as he did in the mid-1990s when Pat Bowlen acquired him from the Minnesota Vikings. And can you imagine Zimmerman paired with Dalton Risner? Yes. Please.

At the same time, I also get the calls for Champ Bailey. I would also add in should-be Hall-of-Famer Louis Wright. But Bailey in Vic Fangio’s defense? Yes. Please. Bailey would shut down one side of the field. That would come in extremely handy against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. I joked with Adam Malnati on the MHR Radio Podcast that Fangio and defensive coordinator Ed Donatell could just shift every other defensive player to the other side of the field.

I don’t need an excuse to traverse back in Broncos’ history. We have all been blessed with incredible moments that will live forever. We have all been blessed to witness some of the best players to ever step foot on the gridiron.

Here’s to creating new memories in the years to come.
