Giants tried to swing trade for Anthony Harris before 2020 NFL Draft

But nothing materialized after all

Anthony Harris might have been the best safety in football in 2019, and to ensure he stayed in the fold, the Minnesota Vikings placed the franchise tag on him rather than allow him to hit unrestricted free agency. He signed the tag less than a week before the 2020 NFL Draft, but that didn’t stop at least one team from trying to make a trade with the purple to acquire his services.

According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the New York Giants made overtures towards the Vikings for Harris leading up to the draft, but the Vikings apparently didn’t want to, in Garafolo’s words, “give him away.” So, no deal materialized between the two teams and Harris remains with the Vikings, where he will play the 2020 season under the tag.

The Giants filled their need for a safety in the 2020 NFL Draft, as they took Alabama star Xavier McKinney, projected as a potential first rounder, in Round 2 of the selection meeting.

I’m not sure what kind of compensation the Vikings and Giants might have been talking about for Harris, but given the verbiage that Garafolo used in his tweet, it doesn’t sound like it was going to be anything substantial. In that case, it’s probably a good thing that Rick Spielman and company didn’t pull the trigger on a trade just to get Harris’ $11.4 million franchise tag off of their books.
