Joey Bosa lands squarely in the top-10 of ESPN’s edge rusher rankings

Is his little brother already better than the Big Bear?

The second Joey Bosa’s younger brother Nick got drafted into the NFL, the constant comparisons between the two started and likely won’t stop until they’re both retired. It’s healthy competition and I hope for the Chargers’ sake, Joey doesn’t want to ever fall into his younger brother’s shadow.

Unfortunately, it seems like those in the NFL already believe Nick to be better than Joey after just one year. According to Jeremy Fowler and the 50+ players, coaches, and executives surveyed for ESPN’s edge rusher rankings, Nick is the third best at the position behind only Khalil Mack and Chandler Jones. Joey finished at No. 6, behind both Von Miller and Myles Garrett.

Here’s what Fowler had to say about Joey’s placement:

“Bosa didn’t get enough top-five votes to crack the threshold, but as far as pure pass rushing, there aren’t many better. He’s channeling Tim Duncan when he rushes, combining textbook discipline with flair.”

From one NFL coordinator, “(He) uses length well, long arm stab, fundamentals, dynamic moves — he’s got it all. “He’s got unique tape, because he’s wide, and because of the way he runs and moves, it’s hard to tell what he’ll do.”

Fowler points out Joey’s lack of pass deflections at the line of scrimmage as one specific smudge on the fifth-year defender’s resume. The top guys ahead of him — Mack, Jones, and Miller — all have 10+ since the start of the 2016 season. But sacks are what matter, and Joey is averaging double-digit sacks for his career up to this point. You can’t ask for much more than that.

“Most agree Joey Bosa is a more refined pass-rusher than Nick right now, but they prefer Nick’s motor and explosion for the long term.”
