Report: Redskins will wait until after season to try to sign Franchise Tagged Brandon Scherff

NFL: Washington Redskins at Arizona Cardinals Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Deadlines don't make deals happen.

The prospects of the Redskins signing right guard Brandon Scherff have not looked good for the past 2 years, and they're not looking any better today. The Redskins placed the franchise tag on the former #5 overall pick, hoping they could get a deal done. John Keim reports that won't be happening, and Washington will have to wait until after the season to start negotiating on another deal.

The deadline to sign Scherff long-term is July 15th. It was reported earlier this week that it didn't look good for the two sides to come to an agreement, and barring some last minute deal, that appears to be true. Scherff will make ~$15 million this year, and is looking for a top $ deal long-term.

The Redskins and Scherff have been negotiating for a long time, but have reportedly not been close to making a deal. This has been complicated by his injuries the last seasons, and the almost complete change over of Washington's front office and coaching staff. Scherff has said he wants to finish his career in Washington, and Rivera has indicated he wants him here long-term, but that doesn't mean anything if the numbers don't lineup for both sides.
