The Kansas City Chiefs are already using the D-word

The first rule of Dynasty Club is.....

In a phenomenon that fans of the New England Patriots are quite familiar with, the Kansas City Chiefs are spending the offseason surfing the wave of adoration that comes with the title “World Champs”.

Which, they should! One of the greatest joys in life, like a freshly made campfire s’more or your favorite band finally playing your favorite song, is being able to look at the 31 other teams that also tried to win the Lombardi Trophy this past year and no matter what they say, your comeback is evergreen:

SCOOOOOOOOORE BOOOOOOOARD!

It always goes down smooth.

Then a couple days ago, you probably heard that Patrick Mahomes signed an extension that dwarfs the career earnings of any NFL quarterback, past, present, or future, by almost a 2:1 margin. Spare me the “we need to see the contract details”, the point Patrick Mahomes IS the Kansas City Chiefs for the next decade or so, and will make roughly half a billion US dollars doing it, barring getting abducted by aliens.

And that’s great too! We’ve....well, football fans in general have been eagerly awaiting this new guard of quarterbacks to finally take the throne from Brady, Brees, the (ugh) Mannings, and Ben Roethlisberger. If the future is Mahomes, Lamar, Deshaun, Dak, Kyler, and maybe Tua and Burrow, it is going to be a FUN next decade, and I mean that with zero sarcasm.

What is a bit odd, though, is that you very, very rarely see a team in a post-LeBron-Decision world calling their shot that they’re a dynasty in the making. Not the fans, not the Stephen A. Smiths and Skip Baylesses, and not the NFL-alumni-who’s-who that does commentary or analysis now. That’s what all those people do, and that’s fine. That’s not who we’re talking about.

The Chiefs themselves have actively embraced the Dynasty talk and are calling their shot saying they’re building one.

Like the team’s official account after they crossed the T’s and dotted the lowercase j’s on the Mahomes contract:

Mahomes himself got in on it too, with the caption below being a direct quote of the last line in the video (which is taken straight from Mahomes’ Twitter account):

Speaking of our man Stephen A, Sammy Watkins said the same thing on ESPN’s Get Up:

And in the least surprising news you’ll ever hear, TE Travis Kelce was calling the Dynasty shot all the way back right after the Super Bowl on February 4th:

“The dynasty is just starting, baby,’’ he told reporters after the Chiefs’ 31-20 win over the 49ers in Miami. “It’s just starting. Motivated to do it again, for sure.’’

So did currently disgruntled franchise-tagged defensive tackle Chris Jones:

And last, and also kind of least, WR Tyreek Hill concurred with Jones and Kelce that Kansas City will “build a f*cking dynasty”:

That’s a lot of dynasty!

For reference purposes, here’s how Tedy Bruschi and Roman Phifer treated the D-word like a hot potato even when they were on the plane for their 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years with a chance to go 3-3 in Super Bowl appearances in those 4 seasons:

Bruschi (in 2007): You try to suppress success and you try to take it one game at a time, but come on, you’re still going to think about it. I still thought about it, Phife still thought about it, we sat on that plane (to the Super Bowl) and Phife told me “Hey Bru, you know, if we win this year, they’ll call us a dynasty”. And I looked at him, and I said “yeah”

Now, granted, that’s from the heydey of Do Your Job™ in New England, and it’s not exactly humble on Bruschi and Phifer’s part either, but you gotta admit, it’s a tad bit different to say “well IF we win this 3rd ring in 4 years, then THEY’LL call us a dynasty”, than it is to shoot your shot after one comeback title win and declare yourselves the next....well, Patriots, really.

Who knows, maybe they’re right!
