We had Ron Rivera mic’d up yesterday at practice and he was as energetic/intense as you‘ve heard - we’re gonna have tons of great mic’d up stuff coming next week on @NBCSWASFootball #WFT pic.twitter.com/7A9QO6JDqd

Rivera said he thought a lot about how to tell the players. The responses from them have stuck, particularly from Alex Smith.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 21, 2020
Rivera thought a lot about how he wanted to tell the players. He said before the team's workout, he left them with a general message. "You can get everything taken away from you but one thing and that's your right to choose, choose how you can approach things in your life." (1/2)

Rivera said he treatments will involve proton therapy and some "other stuff involved with it." He did not mention surgery, but I'm sure he'll be asked in the coming days if that will be required.

I think we all gathered Ron Rivera’s coaching "Plan B" if he needs to step away while undergoing cancer treatments is def. coordinator and 2x NFL head coach Jack Del Rio. Rivera said as much today on the team site: pic.twitter.com/itQ43h4ylP
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 21, 2020
Was told: Del Rio steps in if Rivera must miss any time. Expectation is would only miss during the week. If team needs to be addressed, Del Rio would be the guy. Remember: 3-1 as an interim coach in Denver.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 21, 2020
this is not an al haig situation.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 21, 2020
sigh. people like you really exist. if he stepped in here, it would be interim. just like in Denver. If he took over full time then yes the full time record matters a bit more. but, hey, fun to try and play the gotcha game.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 21, 2020
A head coach is in charge of everything. An interim coach fills in and carries out what the other guy wants. A massive difference that any smart fan would know. Have a good day.

Washington OL Saahdiq Charles is dealing with a calf injury and will miss more of training camp, @PostSports can confirm.
— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) August 21, 2020
No definite timeline for his return, but a person w knowledge of situation was optimistic it “shouldn’t be long.” Expected to be a minor issue.
The Washington Football Team signed offensive linemen Joshua Garnett and David Steinmetz to their 80-man roster on Friday.

To make room for them, the team waived Thaddeus Moss. But Moss' time with the team may not be done.https://t.co/9xizRxL3Ab

It was notable that Appendix V of the CBA didn't mention this rule. Perhaps its omission should have been a sign that the rule was abolished.
— Nick Korte (@nickkorte) August 21, 2020
I wouldn't be surprised if the abolishing of this rule was due to multiple teams cutting players last year for compensatory pick reasons.
And if so, it continues to support the idea that the NFL Management Council really wants to crack down on teams circumventing the compensatory pick formula.
