Full pads. Plenty of contact in 11v11 today. Saw a vintage AP run where he burst through the middle and hit the gas a little bit.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 22, 2020
Geron Christian is back at starting LT today.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
Starting defense with the 1s:
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
FS: Apke
SS: Collins
CBS: Fuller, Darby, Moreland in the slot
LBs: Holcomb, Bostic
DL: Kerrigan, Allen, Ioannidis, Sweat
Saw Sweat go twice during 1-on-1s, and both times he stood up his opponent and easily shed him. Another solid session.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Think we just saw Dwayne Haskins’ best three-rep stretch of camp so far during 9-on-9 drills. First he hit McLaurin short, then he found Gibson on a seam (beat Holcomb) and finally connected with McLaurin on a deep in. Looked very comfortable.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Following this, Haskins threw four incompletions in a row. https://t.co/DiEiCkUb25
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 22, 2020
Sean Davis dropped what would’ve been a pick off Alex Smith. On cue, Chris Harris sprints over to him and yells, “You don’t like nice things?!”
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
Troy Apke has continued to impress. On the final play of Haskins’ reps during 2-minute, Apke delivered a hit on Steven Sims to break up the pass.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
Jimmy Moreland has been around the ball a lot today. Had an INT and would have tackled Quinn for a loss in a game scenario.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
Dwayne Haskins overthrows Cam Sims wide open on crosser, then intercepted by Jimmy Moreland. Receiver may have broke wrong way...Not sure. @WashingtonNFL @WSHFootballSI @theMMQB
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 22, 2020
The People’s Corner is back: Jimmy Moreland with a pick over the middle. Haskins throw. Looked like WR broke one way; ball goes another. So not sure what happened other than TPC with the pick.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 22, 2020
Noticed Shaun Dion Hamilton flying to the ball today
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 22, 2020
I can't imagine where this offense would be without Terry McLaurin. He's been an absolute go-to for Haskins (which he should be when you're that talented)
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 22, 2020
Deshazor Everett another pick off of Kyle Allen. Earlier had a big pop on Sims. Other day broke up a TD. No.22 came to play. @WSHFootballSI @theMMQB @1067theFan
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 22, 2020
Greg Stroman with another pick. This time off Kyle Allen..
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 22, 2020
Dwayne has been completely up & down. Really high or really sharp. Very little consistency. @WSHFootballSI @theMMQB
The pass rush is getting to the QBs again today. Allen had to step up to avoid the rush and threw an incomplete pass.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
9v9 numbers for Haskins, Smith and Allen:
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
Haskins: 4/6
Smith: 1/3
Allen: 6/6
After starting 1/3, Haskins was 3/3 on two passes to McLaurin and one to Antonio Gibson.
Some additional notes from 9v9:
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 22, 2020
-Alex Smith looked strong in the pocket against pressure.
- WRs were getting open in the middle of the field. Near the sidelines, though, they met more pressure.
- RBs were targeted on 7/15 passes.
Quarterbacks throwing to running backs. Expect to see a lot more of that in new OC Scott Turner’s offense this season. pic.twitter.com/DATzstFHXP
— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) August 22, 2020
Alex Smith will get something out of 9-9 work. Example: On one rush, Settle pushed Ismael back and bumped into Smith's left leg as he threw the ball. Not the injured leg, but it's life in an NFL pocket.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 22, 2020
Special teams updates: Isaiah Wright, Steven Sims and Trey Quinn catching punts.

— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Granted it was against the 3s, but Allen also looked sharp during his 3 reps in 9-on-9. Had a short, in-rhythm throw to Cam Sims, rolled out right and hit Jordan Veasy downfield and connected with Isaiah Wright on a skinny post.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
CB Greg Stroman has really come on as of late. Two interceptions in as many practices, and he had another before the media were allowed to watch. Washington needs CB depth, and Stroman is making his case.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
First-team defense for much of today has been Kevin Pierre-Louis on the strongside, Holcomb and Bostic splitting middle and Thomas Davis Sr. on the weakside.

Rivera on calling out W. Martin for not taking advantage of his chance: "I didn't intend to make him an example but I wanted him to understand that we believe enough in him that we're willing to give him this opportunity...He has to understand you have to play well ALL the time."
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
Rivera liked what he saw for about 3/4 of the practice. Did not like —at all- how they finished. Said If want to be consistent through a three-hour game HAVE to be consistent through a 2 hour practice. They weren’t.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 22, 2020
Rivera said he's going to do three days of pads in a row, and wants to see players play with tempo for the entire practice.
— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 22, 2020
"It's 2 hours, 10 minutes in and we're dragging our butts. Imagine getting to the 3-hour mark (of a game) and we're walking. We can't have that." https://t.co/G1kX7H7BUz
Coach Rivera said that practice today “wasn’t good enough. Today wasn’t acceptable.” Went on to say the defense played well, but the team didn’t overall.
— Logan Campbell (@loganncampbelll) August 22, 2020
Ron Rivera was LIVID after practice. His speech to players after included a lot of words I can't repeat (on Twitter).
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
He pointed to Adrian Peterson and I think Thomas Davis as examples of players who do it the "right way." ... "That's why they're still playing!"
That was a lengthy emotional challenge from Rivera for his players to seize opportunity. We will see who hears the message.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 22, 2020
Just my hunch but I don’t think this was about Wes Martin. This was about all the young players and Rivera knew Martin could handle it.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 22, 2020
Martin https://t.co/Isp09ZCiV4
— Bill-in-Bangkok (@billhorgan2005) August 23, 2020
Ron Rivera has stressed playing fast all throughout the offseason and every day at practice. Much of his disappointment today was because of that - he felt players were dragging at practice.
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
"Club Jay" is officially retired - Can't even repeat much of what @RiverboatRonHC said because he was so frustrated./angry..
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 22, 2020
Good for him. This place has been way too lax for way too long.
If only someone actually tried to convey that for years.....#WFT @WSHFootballSI
.@RiverboatRonHC says they are going to be in pads two more days in a row, so that they can build "calluses" ..
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 22, 2020
Says they play 3 hour games...you don't want to see the tempo & energy wane....
You don't want to see a "team dragging our butts"@WSHFootballSI @SInow @theMMQB
Another lackluster practice from Washington and Ron Rivera is lighting into his team. Wants players flying around and has been very clear he will not accept the current effort.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 22, 2020
Whewww....I've never seen a HC around here in my 12 years chew a team out like that and for that long....
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 22, 2020

Training Camp Press Conference - Jonathan Allen https://t.co/nMdwvmK54z
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) August 22, 2020
Here's Jonathan Allen, phrasing this as politely as is humanly possible:
— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 22, 2020
“I’m not really big on comparisons. Every coaching staff is different. Every situation is unique. But what we’ve done this year, I love it. We’re physical, we work hard, we work smart and we work together."
Culture isn't built overnight but @jonallen93_ likes what he sees pic.twitter.com/Hcx5u7tspL
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) August 22, 2020
Allen makes a solid point: Without OTAs and minicamp, the players entered training camp having not played for seven months, so there are going to be days where practice is not up to standard. They just cannot let that become a habit.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Ron Rivera after practice today ... pic.twitter.com/XML2fjzBQX
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
Allen summarized Rivera's fiery post-practice speech with two words: "need more."
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
"I 100% agree, I'm 100% bought in to what he's saying."
Roullier said that Rivera's post-practice speech was about consistency and playing hard every day. Rivera added that they cannot win a Super Bowl practicing like that.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Roullier: "I've noticed how much Coach Rivera has had to take on during all this. Coach Rivera always says he 'has broad shoulders and can take it.'" ... From a player's standpoint, it's great for us. It allows us to focus and make sure the team is headed in a right direction."
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
Roullier said there's always a little bit of a challenge when fellow offensive linemen are rotating, but the guys are used to it because most of the time the same five guys aren't always out there.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Roullier said his relationship with Dwayne Haskins has "definitely grown."
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
"He's becoming a great veteran out there." Said he's grown lot in terms of understanding the offense, reading defenses and showing leadership.
Roullier said he looks at this year, which is the last of his contract, just like he's looked at every other year. His preparation and mindset will remain the same.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 22, 2020
Since being drafted in 2017, he's started 37 of 48 games at center.
Roullier said he and his teammates were "pretty amazed" when Alex Smith was able to go through 9-on-9 drills for the first time Thursday. Said the team respects him so much for what he's been able to accomplish to get back out onto the field.

Per the transaction wire, Thaddeus Moss was officially waived today, so teams have until Sunday at 4 p.m. ET to claim him. If he clears waivers, he'll go on IR with Washington.
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 22, 2020
Rivera on Thaddeus Moss (foot), who will go on IR if he clears waivers today: "Knowing what his potential is, knowing what he did in college football, knowing his skillset ... he's not healthy enough to get out there every day and he would just fall further and further behind."

It was good to be back and wearing a different professional hat. Navigating COVID is complex, unpredictable.
