The Bengals are ready to unleash Joe Mixon.
The Cincinnati Bengals improved their offense this season by adding quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Tee Higgins. This offseason, every headline has been about Burrow and how he’ll transform this offense.
However, it’ll be the players that have built up this roster that may have the greatest impact. A.J. Green returning and Joe Mixon finally with an improved offensive line may be the key to success for the Bengals, a team that won just two games in 2019.
Wanting a contract extension before the year commences, Mixon is a wildly underrated star in the NFL.
Bengals’ offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, in a conversation with Geoff Hobson, talked about how the offense is that much better with a heavily involved Mixon, implying that we may see more Mixon in 2020..
“He gets better as he gets more carries. As the season went along we got better getting him more touches. When he’s touching the ball 20 plus times, the total at the end of the game means his numbers are usually pretty good. He’s been very effective as far as just pure touches. Carries and catches,” Callahan said.
Callahan isn’t wrong either.
Averaging 4.1 yards per carry, Mixon has cemented as himself as the best running back in the NFL that has yet to appear in a Pro Bowl. Consistently snubbed, Mixon may look to change that dynamic this season after ending 2019 on a hot streak.
“The more Joe touches the ball the better it is for our offense, without a doubt. All the ways we can find to get him the ball, the better it’s going to be,” he continued.
Last season, Mixon totaled 278 rushes and 35 receptions. He actually put up fewer yards than a season ago largely due to the struggles of the team’s offensive line. Now with Jonah Williams, this unit will have some hope.
If they can hold up, fans should easily expect the best yet from Mixon.
