Bengals News (8/16): Foreseeing success

Jordan Palmer worked closely with Joe Burrow this offseason, and he has some thoughts of what we will see in his future.

Hobson's Choice: Bengals.com Senior Writer Geoff Hobson answers questions from fans.
Unfair, however, to compare Burrow to anyone right now. Heck, he hasn't worn NFL shoulder pads yet. I'm an old school scribe, but not that old. I was only 10 when Cook won the 1969 AFL passing title as a rookie. Never saw him play. And let's give Burrow the courtesy of having his first NFL practice in pads (let alone his first game) before saying anything at all.

Cincinnati Bengals Sign Defensive End Amani Bledsoe
Bledsoe (6-4, 280), a first-year player out of the University of Oklahoma, originally was a college free agent signee of the Tennessee Titans in 2019. He spent all of last season on the Titans' practice squad, and then was with the team during the '20 offseason before being waived on July 26.

Bengals Booth Podcast: An interview with cornerback Winston Rose and observations from training camp
It's the "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" edition of the Bengals Booth Podcast as Dan Hoard and Dave Lapham discuss their first day of watching Joe Burrow at training camp. Plus, Hoard chats with newcomer Winston Rose who led the CFL in interceptions last year.

Bengals release more images of Joe Burrow, star players from camp
But the team has done a good job of releasing as much footage as possible from the practices, which finally featured helmets last week and will see players don pads for the first time early next week.

What former NFL QB Jordan Palmer expects Joe Burrow to accomplish
But what are reasonable expectations for Burrow in 2020? What, exactly, should we anticipate seeing from him in his rookie season? Former NFL quarterback Jordan Palmer, who spent three seasons on Cincinnati’s roster, laid out this week what he expects to see from Burow in 2020.

Tyler Boyd has a theory about why Bengals players don't get the national recognition he thinks they deserve
Tyler Boyd, a Pittsburgh-area native, grew up a Steelers fan before starring at the University of Pittsburgh. As a kid, Boyd witnessed his hometown team win two Super Bowls while flaunting a roster that included several future Hall of Fame players. Boyd, who is now entering his fifth season with the Cincinnati Bengals, wants to garner the same recognition that some of the players he idolized growing up received during their careers.

Bill Belichick wasn’t in mood talk Bengals taping scandal punishment
It was only a matter of time before the subject of the Cincinnati Bengals taping scandal and the punishment delivered to the New England Patriots came up with Bill Belichick.

Billy Price gains weight in hopes of competing for starting job
So far, that couldn't be farther from reality. After being an ironman at Ohio State, Price has dealt with multiple injuries during his first two NFL seasons. Trey Hopkins beat him out for the starting center job in training camp last season.

Bengals DE Bryce Sterk was transitioning to TE with Dolphins
Sterk, a college free agent who signed with the Dolphins after the draft, apparently did so after agreeing to make the transition from defensive end to…tight end.

Around the league

Kittle on having long-term security: 'I can just go out there and play football and run through someone’s face'
With padded practices set to kick off for the 49ers in two days, Kittle is still in the "pre-match promo" phase of his preparation for the main event that is the season opener on Sept. 13. Making his first appearance in front a hot mic since agreeing to a five-year extension on Thursday, the big-money tight end expressed his enthusiasm about getting a deal done.

Packers, NT Kenny Clark agree to 4-year, $70M extension
Clark is signing a four-year extension for $70 million that includes a $25 million signing bonus with $37 million paid over the first two years, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Saturday morning. The team later confirmed the extension. Clark's new deal makes him the highest-paid nose tackle in league history.

Zimmer: Smith can have normal life, maybe play again
Had it not been for Smith testing positive for the novel coronavirus, it's anyone's guess when or if his need to fix a bicuspid aortic valve that he was born with would have been uncovered. He doesn't believe he would have, though, which he told reporters on Friday.

LaFleur on Jordan Love: 'There's a lot to clean up right now'
"He's very natural," the second-year coach said via NFL Network's Stacey Dales on Saturday. "There's a lot to clean up right now. He's a young quarterback that is learning a new system, and just how specific we are with the footwork. I think that takes time. But I am pleased at how he attacks it on a daily basis. I think he's a really intelligent kid. And he's very athletic. So, I think it's a matter of time before he can pick up the mechanics. But, our challenge to him each and everyday, is just you gotta get that one percent better."
