It was a mostly down day for the offense on Sunday.
The Buffalo Bills wrapped up this strangest of training camps with their tenth and final practice of the 2020 installation. Beginning with Monday’s session, regular season rules are in effect, so this was the last practice that media members would be able to report on with at least somewhat standard camp standards.
After a solid scrimmage where the Bills’ first-team offense easily handled its second-team defense, today’s practice saw the starting offense struggle a bit against the starting defense. Here is a quick wrap of some of the major happenings at camp on Sunday.
Josh Allen Struggles
After clearing the 300-yard mark for the first time in his professional career during Thursday’s scrimmage (obviously in a far less important setting than an actual game), Allen had a subpar day overall. While Joe Buscaglia and Matt Fairburn of The Athletic provide an outstanding breakdown of his entire day to show that much of the ugly final line (5-of-11, one sack) wasn’t necessarily Allen’s fault, there are a few plays that show Allen still struggling to break one of his worst habits.
Allen stared down Duke Williams and hit Tre’Davious White with a pass that should have been intercepted. He also showed a lack of accuracy under duress, as he overthrew John Brown when he was pressured and unable to set his feet, and then missed Devin Singletary on a ball over the middle. Allen’s final throw of the day came after what probably would have been a sack, but he forced a ball that was intercepted by Levi Wallace.
Allen had some good moments (a beauty to Dawson Knox and some solid completions to John Brown), but his flaws were on display during Sunday’s outing.
Roster Notes
- One of Allen’s better throws was a ball that hit Robert Foster in the hands. Foster dropped the ball. It would be quite a surprise if he made the team given how poorly he played last year and how well the rookie wideouts, especially Gabriel Davis, have played thus far in camp.
- Speaking of Davis, Sal Capaccio of WGR had a great thread about the rookie wideout and former Bills’ training camp darlings. It seems that every day there’s been another positive report about Davis, and today was no different—Capaccio also tweeted a video of Davis running a great route and beating Wallace for a touchdown from Allen—but he cautioned fans against lumping Davis in with David Sills, Brandon Reilly, Dez Lewis, and many other August heroes of yesteryear. Capaccio noted Davis’s draft pedigree and the overall strength of this wide receiver class as evidence that the rookie from UCF may be the real deal.
- Rookie kicker Tyler Bass was perfect on the day, knocking in six field goals, including one over 50 yards, in his second official day as the top kicker on the team. His interview about earning his keep was a good one.
- Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll had some lukewarm comments about quarterback Jake Fromm that Buscaglia and Fairburn reported in their practice recap. When asked about how his teammates have responded to Fromm, who was just 3-of-6 passing Sunday with an interception, Daboll said that was “probably a better question for his teammates.” Rather than inventing a coach-speak platitude, giving essentially the most obvious non-answer to the question doesn’t seem to suggest much positive.
Injury Notes
- Running back Zack Moss was in a red non-contact jersey today. He’s dealing with a neck injury.
- Wide receiver Stefon Diggs sat again due to back soreness.
- Left guard Quinton Spain was out with a foot injury today.
- Running backs Taiwan Jones (knee) and Christian Wade (quad), guard Jon Feliciano (chest), tight end Tommy Sweeney (foot), fullback Patrick DiMarco (neck), and cornerback Josh Norman (hamstring) rounded out the injury report.
- Defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. and linebacker Corey Thompson each were healthy enough to return to practice. Cox Jr., in particular, seemed to have a good day, as he beat Dion Dawkins more than once to pressure Allen.
