Case Keenum a perfect guide for Baker Mayfield

NFL: Cleveland Browns-Training Camp Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Veteran quarterback excited about the big-play opportunities that await Mayfield in Kevin Stefanski’s offense.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield recently talked about how he had “lost himself” during a rocky 2019 season.

While it is up to Mayfield to find the path back to success this season, it certainly does not hurt to have veteran quarterback Case Keenum around as a guide.

Keenum has a solid understanding of what head coach Kevin Stefanski wants from the offense after spending the 2017 season as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings with Stefanski as the team’s quarterback coach.

Now in his first season with the Browns, Keenum is settling into the role of helping Mayfield digest the wide-zone schemes of Stefanski’s playbook.

And even though it is still early, Keenum likes what he has seen from Mayfield through the first five practices of training camp, according to The Beacon Journal’s Nate Ulrich:

“Baker’s doing a tremendous job because some of this, he’s coming in cold, and he’s operating getting in and out of the huddle, has great feet, great tempo, and he’s even able to speed up or kind of tempo, slow down his drop at certain times, too, depending on the concept and where it is down the field. I’ve been very impressed with how quickly he’s picked it up, especially with not having a spring together [due to the COVID-19 pandemic]. We were all working virtually, trying to send our footwork [videos to the coaches], so to do that in such a short time, it’s been very impressive.

“He has a lot stronger arm in person than he does on film, and he made some really good throws on film. It’s been fun to get to know him first and then see him work, see him operate and see how he interacts with teammates. I’m very impressed.”

The impact that Keenum can have on Mayfield from Monday through Saturday is not lost on Stefanski, according to cleveland.com:

“On the practice field, in the meeting room, in the weight room – all over. Case, I have been around him so I know him. He is a son of a coach. He loves this game, he wants to win and he wants to be a part of winning. I know that relationship is so important between the starter and the backup. I can tell you that he is eager to help this team win in any way he can, and that is supporting Baker in any way he can.”

Mayfield may have been lost at times in 2019, but with Keenum helping to guide him through training camp, it may not take very long for Mayfield to find his path back.
