A report says Adrian Colbert intends to sign with Kansas City as soon as he clears required COVID-19 testing.

According to a Tuesday evening report from friend-of-the-site Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports, former Miami Dolphins safety Adrian Colbert intends to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs as soon as he passes through the three-day COVID-19 protocol that is required before a free agent may enter a team facility.

Taken by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft, Colbert played with the 49ers for two seasons, starting six games as a rookie free safety. In his second year, he started six more before suffering a high ankle sprain that landed him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

Released by the 49ers with an injury settlement just after 2019’s final cutdown, Colbert was signed to the Seattle Seahawks practice squad in mid-September — but by mid-October, he had been released again. In late November, he was signed to the Miami Dolphins, where he started five games to end the season. The Dolphins waived him on Monday; he cleared waivers on Tuesday.

Colbert, 26, is a product of Miami University in Florida, standing 6 feet 2 and weighing 205 pounds. Over his three NFL seasons, he’s played in 27 games (starting 17), notching 80 tackles (65 solo), eight passes defensed and a pair of forced fumbles. He hasn’t yet recorded an NFL interception.

If the Chiefs do sign Colbert in the next few days, it could be an indicator that the Chiefs are not convinced second-year safety Juan Thornhill will be ready to be taken off the team’s physically-unable-to-perform list before the season begins on September 10.
