We secured a sponsorship deal with Sports Betting Dimes, so get ready for more gambling talk this year. Sports Betting dimes gave the San Francisco 49ers the fifth-best chance to go over their win total, which is 10.5:

Indianapolis Colts (67.4% chance of going over 8.5)

Minnesota Vikings (63.1% chance of going over 8.5)

Kansas City Chiefs (61.8% chance of going over 11.5)

Green Bay Packers (61.7% chance of going over 8.5)

San Francisco 49ers (60.1% chance of going over 10.5)

Chicago Bears (57.8% chance of going over 7.5)

You can get favorably odds to bet the Niners coming out to win the division and to come out of the NFC as well. If you find any site that is giving you 10.5 for San Francisco, hammer the over. Even if they fall back a couple of games, they’ll be at 11 wins. 10.5 feels like a trap, but that won’t stop me from placing a bet.

49ers practice report: Can Johnathan Cyprien strengthen depth at safety?

But he’s more than a camp body. Before Cyprien arrived, the 49ers’ only viable backup to Jaquiski Tarrt was Marcell Harris, a 2018 sixth-round pick who took his lumps when he filled in for Tarrt in the final four regular-season games in 2019.

It doesn’t hurt Cyprien’s chances that he spent three seasons in Jacksonville with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who was the Jaguars linebackers coach. Cyprien averaged 113 tackles a season with Jacksonville, posting a career-high 127 in 2016.

“Sometimes I feel like you can be underappreciated because of your draft status: They expect a little bit more out of you,” Saleh said. “We always felt Cyp was a very good football player. He knows our system, he’s in great shape, he moves very well … It’s just another piece of the puzzle to see how we can get a little bit better.”

Practice report: Why the 49ers are willing to go small at nose tackle

Solomon Thomas, starting NFL nose tackle?

That could be the case for the 49ers if their top player at the position, D.J. Jones, misses an extended period with the shoulder injury he suffered Thursday. The 49ers had no update on Jones’ condition Friday, saying the initial tests he took Thursday were inconclusive.

In the meantime, the team has several other — mostly smaller — players to man the position. That starts with Thomas, who, despite bulking up to 280 pounds this season, is traditionally light for the position, and Kentavius Street, who appears to have bounced back from last year’s knee issues and is off to a strong start in training camp. Street, the Wolfpack’s weight-room champion when he was at North Carolina State, was 280 pounds when he was measured at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine.

Javon Kinlaw could step in for 49ers if D.J. Jones has to miss time

If D.J. Jones’ shoulder injury proves to be serious, Javon Kinlaw is ready to step in for the 49ers on the interior defensive line.

Jones left the field early Thursday, unable to finish practice after getting rolled up on in a pile. General manager John Lynch reported Friday in an interview on KNBR that preliminary evaluations have been inconclusive and more tests have been scheduled.

Kinlaw, who the 49ers drafted with the No. 14 overall pick, could be someone who could fill in if Jones is off the field for an extended time.

Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh says it’s a natural fit for the South Carolina product but Kinlaw isn’t the only option the team has. Solomon Thomas, Kentavius Street and Darrion Daniels also are being considered.

Saleh added that defensive line coach Kris Kocurek has each player training in all four positions on the line so it won’t be a reach for anyone. As opposed to a traditional nose tackle, the 49ers value speed, get off and explosiveness — which all of them have — as opposed to just brute strength.

49ers adjust practice schedule due to wildfires in Bay Area

Originally scheduled to begin practice at 10:15 a.m. PT on Friday, the Niners made the last-minute call to move that practice to 9:10 a.m. because of concerns about the air quality index reaching a level that would not allow them to practice.

Additionally, running back Tevin Coleman and offensive lineman Jaryd Jones-Smith were excused from practice early as a safeguard against the climbing air quality index number.

“We have some tool that tells us the number of what the air quality is,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday. “So, if it gets to 200, there’s no choice. [At] 200, we’re not allowed to go out there, and I think it was at times [Wednesday]. ... If the number gets to 200, and we’re basically at the mercy of how the winds go, then we’re not allowed to be out there. So, keeping our fingers crossed, hoping it doesn’t get there.”

It didn’t get there on Friday, but the AQI hovered between 150 and 155 for much of the team’s practice. Although that’s still considered “unhealthy,” it doesn’t rise to the level of the league’s automatic cancellation of practice.

The Good and Not So Good from Day 6 of 49ers Training Camp

THE NOT SO GOOD

1. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Bad Jimmy made his first appearance of training camp. He was accurate — 17 of 23 — but he was reckless with the football after protecting it so well the first five days of camp. Today, he made an ill-advised throw off his back foot that sailed over his intended receiver and landed in the hands of Richard Sherman. Easiest interception of Sherman’s life. Later, Garoppolo almost got intercepted by Tartt. And during the final drill of the morning, Garoppolo had 1:35 to lead the offense 70 yards for a touchdown and ran out of time. Not a terrible day, but not up to the standard he has set this offseason.

2. Cornerback Richard Sherman.

Intercepted Garoppolo, but also gave up two first-down catches to Bourne during the offense’s final drive of practice. It seemed like Garoppolo was picking on Sherman, who seemed to be conceding 15-yard completions. I have a feeling NFL offenses will attack Sherman this season for the first time in a decade. The 49ers offense already has.

3. Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon.

Still hasn’t regained the confidence he had during last year’s training camp. Committed an egregious pass-interference penalty against Dante Pettis when Pettis ran deep. Witherspoon just panicked and grabbed him. Didn’t even try to cover him properly. Poor Ahkello. He may never recover mentally from playing so poorly last season after he injured his foot.
