The Bears’ Week 1 starting quarterback battle has finally reached its conclusion.
The grueling training camp competition has come an end, and Mitchell Trubisky is expected be the Bears’ Week 1 starting quarterback when they take on the Lions next Sunday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news, citing that Trubisky’s progression throughout camp and his leadership as deciding factors.
The Bears brought in Nick Foles to push Trubisky for his starting job. The Super Bowl LII MVP fought tooth and nail with the 2017 No. 2 pick, but it appears that his efforts were not strong enough to remove the incumbent starter from his position.
Trubisky showed some promise in his three seasons as the team’s starting quarterback, including a Pro Bowl campaign in 2018 that saw the Bears win the NFC North and finish the season 12-4. However, after regressing last season and falling down to 8-8, his prospects as their franchise quarterback quickly diminished. Winning the starting job is certainly a good sign for his future, but now he has to prove himself as a player capable of sustaining success as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
The lack of a preseason likely made the quarterback battle a tough one for the Bears’ staff to evaluate, as they had to rely solely on practices for on-field comparisons. With Trubisky having been with the organization for four years, he did have somewhat of an advantage as the previous holder of the job, and it seems as though Foles didn’t impress the coaching staff enough to usurp him from the starting lineup.
Whether this decision turns out to be the right one remains to be seen. There is also still a chance that Foles could take over as the starter if Trubisky falls apart early on in the regular season. For the time being, though, Trubisky will be the quarterback taking snaps for the Bears.
