Drew Lock on Albert Okwuegbunam: ‘The guy’s a monster.’

If the Denver Broncos are looking for a red zone threat in 2020, they may not have to look far with rookie tight end Albert Okwuegbunam on the roster.

When the Denver Broncos drafted Albert Okwuegbunam in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft people immediate thought of the Drew Lock connection since they both played at Missouri together. However, two weeks into training camp and its clear Albert O is going to be a bit more than just a connection to the Broncos starting quarterback. He came here to score touchdowns.

It seems every day through training camp we have heard about Okwuegbunam’s ability to come down with the ball in the red zone for touchdowns. If that’s all he does in 2020, it will be a huge boost to an offense that has struggled to score over 17 points a game for the past three seasons.

Drew Lock was asked about Okwuegbunam after practice this weekend and the word that came to his mind to describe him was ‘monster’.

“The guy’s a monster,” Lock said. “He just has a really good feel for the 20-and-in. He just really does. You throw him up a ball he’s going to go get it. He’s sneaky. He’s slippery fast down there. We’ll put it that way. Open field, he’s going to blow by you. In the red zone it’s just kind of a sneaky fast. It doesn’t look like he’s moving very quick then all of a sudden he’s two yards behind the guy or slipped underneath the guy somehow. He’s doing a really good job right now. Just like we all do, we all need to keep focusing on the little things and just trying to be perfect. I’ve been really impressed with Albert since he’s been here. He’s definitely more of a grown man than the last time I saw him two years ago.”

Noah Fant is the clear starter in 2020, but if Albert O can come along to be a red zone threat and eventually join Fant as a 1-2 punch inside. Whew, with Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy outside. That’s some firepower there.
