Free agent RB Devonta Freeman visiting Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are hosting free agent running back Devonta Freeman for a visit, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Signing a proven veteran like Freeman makes sense for the young team. The Jaguars, along with every other franchise in the NFL, cut the roster down to 53 players today. Jacksonville went thin at running back with just three bodies — Chris Thompson, Devine Ozigbo and James Robinson — currently on the active roster. The team also recently placed second-year running back Ryquell Armstead on the Reserve/COVID-19 list (for the second time) and will activate him once he is cleared to return.

These moves, of course, come after the somewhat surprising news that Jacksonville will move on without former No. 4 overall pick Leonard Fournette. Fournette has since signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Freeman was released by the Atlanta Falcons in March. After being selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Freeman has spent his entire career in Atlanta. He has rushed 951 times for 3,972 yards (4.2 yards per carry), and 32 touchdowns. He has also caught 257 passes for an additional 2,015 yards and 11 more touchdowns. However, in 14 games in 2019, Freeman averaged a career low 3.6 yards per carry, with just 656 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Freeman, now 28-years-old, is a two-time Pro Bowler in 2015 and 2016, and a one-time All-Pro selection (second-team in 2015). He also the led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in 2015 with 11.
